The former first lady of the Philippines has become an icon of popular ridicule since the 1986 People Power revolution brought an end to her "ridiculous dreamworld." That world is captured here in its empty glitter, but Ellison, bureau chief of Knight-Ridder newspapers in Mexico City, is primarily concerned with showing how the Steel Butterfly made comic opera out of a historic opportunity for greatness: "an act of selfishness far uglier than any shopping binge." Tracing her lonely, traumatic upbringing in Leyte, her fabled courtship by Ferdinand Marcos and her role in his rise to the presidency, the author describes how the first lady gradually traded in a fairytale dream of romance for a dream of power. When the dream became a reality, she used that power for self-glorification ("Look! Look how the people love me."). This well-researched biography sheds new light on the Manila-Washington connection, the career of Benigno Aquino and his self-effacing wife Corazon, and Ferdinand Marcos' "creative diplomacy," which apparently included using his wife as a sexual lure. Tales of the Chisholm Trail and of Billy the Kid are highlights of the book, but it is Siringo’s earliest years—before he became a cowboy (or Cow-boy, as he originally put it) that may be the most compelling. In all, his story is so full of excitement that something as remarkable as the Indianola Hurricane of 1875 receives little attention—even though Siringo spent the night in water up to his neck. It’s a Texas must-read.

Cowboy memoir classic. . .

At the age of 28, when he wrote his memoir, Charles Siringo had already been a cowboy for 15 years. Born in 1855 on the Gulf Coast of Texas, Siringo worked in one job after another across the Midwest and Southwest, ranging from St. Louis to New Mexico. Still a teenager, he settled on cowboying at the time of the great cattle drives and was apparently very good at it, though no luckier than most at making a living from it. He worked for many years for the LX ranch in the Texas Panhandle, for a while rounding up cattle that had drifted away or were stolen. This occupation put him in New Mexico at the time of Billy the Kid, who was four years his junior. He never met Billy but knew men who did, and his imagination seems to have been fired by the stories they told about the pursuit and eventual shooting of this young outlaw. Though by his own account Siringo never shot a man himself, he was a dead aim with a six-shooter.
His memoir was written, as he admits in his preface, to make money "and lots of it." It's not great literature, beginning with his earliest childhood memories and recounting the events of his life with no particular sense of compelling storytelling. It's just one darn thing after another. But a reader with some patience will be rewarded in the latter part of the book as his adventures begin adding up to something like a real narrative - working for the LX as a range detective - and he begins emerging as more of a coherent protagonist in his own story.
And it's not all about the work of cowboying, herding and rounding up cattle, and taking them to market. There are some close scrapes and some fearless derring-do. And there are also matters of the heart, as the young cowboy falls in love with a string of sweethearts he meets along the way, finally marrying one he meets in Kansas and ending his career as a cowboy. I'm happy to recommend this book to anyone with an interest in the Wild West, cowboys, ranching in the days of the open ranges, and social history of the late 19th century. [The 1950 edition is worth having for the wonderful introduction by Texas folklorist J. Frank Dobie.]

One of Dobie's Favorites

The most authentic book ever written about the Texas cowboy. J. Frank Dobie said that "no record of cowboy life has supplanted this rollicky, reckless, realistic chronicle" and that it is "the most-real, non-fiction book on cowboy life." Siringo worked as a cowboy for Shanghai Pearce, rode with a posse of Texas cowboys to New Mexico to track down Billy the Kid and took part in numerous cattle drives. A Texas history classic.

Great book!!

This book is by and about a real cowboy -- not a Clint Eastwood or John Wayne type -- but a true to life cowboy.
Charlie Siringo punched cattle. His brush with history? He joined in the chase for Billy the Kid. He never saw the outlaw, but it was just one more of many things this average cowpoke did and wrote about.
Reading this book gives a person a feel of what it was REALLY like to live and work as a cowboy in Texas.

I enjoyed this story and it was a fast read, however I gave it 3 stars because this CLIFF HANGER suspense is driving me crazy!!! I am reading anticipating the next move when BAMM.... The story just stops and there is no part 3!!! KC Blaze is a very talented writer but reading her work is beginning to be too STRESSFUL! Can we please get a whole novel instead of all of these little novellas??? For the most part it's a very good story.

Loved this storyline, Raheim really grew as a responsible dedicated man. Raheim was so hurt by his brothers death and his feelings were felt through the authors writing. Raheim and Felecia were a great couple who loved one another. Raheims mom release from prison will be nothing but trouble. Raheims crazy ex needs to be handled!!! Looking forward to part 3!!

Mark Johnson is a health and science reporter at the "Milwaukee Journal Sentinel", where he has worked since 2000. He was a member of the "Journal Sentinel" team that won the Pulitzer Prize for explanatory reporting on the Nic Volker story in 2011. Finale 2012: A Trailblazing Guide is the Missing Manual Everybody Needs!

This book is a must-buy for anybody who wants to get the most out of Finale 2012. Long-known as a program with a steep learning-curve, Finale has improved a lot over the years but still is best learned with a manual in hand. Unfortunately Finale doesn't come with a very good manual for reading in printed form, and thus Mark Johnson has filled a very big void with this excellently written book.

It is something everybody who is new to Finale should have because it starts from the very beginning and takes the user through an organized series of steps to become proficient with this version of Finale.

For those who are upgrading from an earlier version of Finale this book is essential because of the many changes which come with each new upgrade of Finale. This book can have long-time Finale users feeling comfortable with the new changes and can get them back to the reason they use Finale in the first place: creating excellent looking printed music with wonderful playback on the computer.

A book for all Finale users to buy!

The way MakeMusic should have done it

Mark Johnson's book is very clearly written and is much more musician-friendly than most documentation issued by MakeMusic (Finale's publisher). The index and table of contents are well organized and make it quite easy to locate specific subject matter - infinitely more so than the online User Manual that is part of the Finale application. Thus far I have been able to find everything I've looked for. I also flip through the book occasionally just to spot useful things of which I'd previously been unaware.
The only problem, and it's probably not the author's fault, is that he says (on page xxi), "Finale 2011 contains a GREAT (sic) new Quick Reference Guide. Read this resource cover-to-cover and keep it by your side . . ."
I did not receive such a Guide from MakeMusic with my copy of Finale 2011. If it really exists it would probably make using the application more straightforward and I would really like to have a copy. But chances are that when Mr. Johnson was working on his book back in 2009 he was supplied with something which MakeMusic later decided against issuing.

Wish I would have found before

This book is a must have for any person learning Finale. I have been using Finale since 1998 and everytime I had an issue I would always look it up on the forums and had to sift threw sometimes dozens of entries to find what I was looking for. Now, I don't have to do that, which makes me less frustrated. Also, the steps to execute the things I want to do are a lot easier to follow then some of the people's posts on the forum. I really wish I would have discovered this book earlier in my Finale experience.

I'd say it's worth it's weight in gold but it's an ebook

I hope that this book and unit 2 become foundational texts in ITPs around the world. The information is thorough, well written, and accessible. While many claim that "So You Want To Be An Interpreter?" is the first text a student should read upon deciding to be an interpreter, I would suggest this instead. It presents interpreting as what it really is - infinitely complex, often challenging, and at times overwhelming. It doesn't simplify anything we do, but presents it in it's entirety with clear examples and illustrations. Truly an important work and I am so grateful for the accessible cost. This book has become one of the most referenced texts in my library and will be an invaluable addition to your library and your practice.

This is a required textbook for my online college class. I was instructed to buy the Kindle version. I have an iPad so I ended up getting the App in order to view it. It's a very important book if you are interested in becoming a sign language interpreter. There is a a lot of good information in it. He talks about language and communication in general. Then, breaks down linguistics and explains the interpreting and transliterating process. I highly recommend it!
