Outstanding

I only heard her show once, and was not impressed at all. But this book is quite excellent if you are trying to sort out your life, or what you may be going through or did go through. While I didn't find all the chapters worth reading, the ones I did like were very insightful, essentially doing mini case studies on what has happened with her callers, by relating their stories.
The first chapter, Stupid Chivalry, explores how guys who are "too nice" to women may be denying their real needs and therefore not being real. This backfires for the "nice" guy, but results in a dupe being available to be used by a woman who wants things done for her. Women want men who are real as mates. The chapter also explores guyus being nice because they may feel that their hand is so weak, that they welcome someone who has a lot of troubles so that they won't have to worry about being abandoned. They will feel needed. But unlikely is the case that they will be wanted for more than solving problems of the troubled woman.
The 6th chapter, Stupid Matrimony, explores idiotic motivations for getting married. "She's cute!" is one of them. With so many marriages ending in divorce, it is obvious that people do not always have the resources to think through what is drawing them towards marriage in a practical way. This book is an excellent eye-opener. Just because someone is wonderful to have fun with does not mean that you can overlook their flaws and get away with it. The message of this book, through the histories of her listeners is you will not get away with it. Having someone you can rely on and work with is very important. And making excuses for a woman's current behavior, if it isn't good for a relationship, won't make that behavior go away in the future.
In short, those two chapters were so good in helping me analyze my life that I picked up a copy of the book for a friend who has done some of the stupid things. This book is about seeing stupid things we can do as stupid, rather than just feeling our way through and thinking things will magically work out, and that we will be appreciate, or that the woman will behave better.
If you are trying to sort things out in you life, relative to women, this book should help you see a lot more clearly. And I say that having read many books on related areas.

Many of the 10 things didn't apply to me personally, but that wasn't a surprise. However, one of the ten was right on the money & explained why I have made such bad choices in the past w/ choosing a woman. Now that I'm aware of my tendency, it helps me to be more selective & to not fall into the same trap.

Hope men don't read this and think that this kind of behaviour is what women want

What I liked:

GOOD WRITING: I've read Sylvia Day in the past, and her writing flows. There are no annoying typos, actually I found one, but the novel is not typo-ridden, which seems to be a common thing with Kindle books. There was some repetition but the author's vocabulary is wide enough that you don't feel like you're reading the same thing over and over again.

FAST-PACED PLOT: The story moved along nicely. Something was always happening to move the story forward, but wasn't always sure which direction the story was heading in.

SETTING: Lots of modern references and brands mentioned, but not overdone. There's no doubt that we are in the high-flying world of upper class New York.

What I didn't like:
CHARACTERS: Everyone in this book is too perfect, at least on the outside. Can't remember how many times Gideon was referred to as the hottest, sexiest, fittest, most eligible, gorgeous [insert Adonis quality here] man in the city. And the heroine was physically attractive too, as was her roommate, and her gym instructor, her mother, the receptionist etc etc. It was a pity that everyone was model material and there were no ugly Smeagols anywhere, not even as interesting side characters.

SEX SCENES: It's hot, until it's not. There have got to be at least 20 sex scenes in the novel, double the number of orgasms, triple the number of references to Gideon's constant erections (was he on Viagra?) and an untold number of times that the characters moan each other's names. It gets a bit old. I began skipping the sex scenes, which became banal and to be honest, a bit of a turn OFF. Sometimes less really is more.

EMOTION: Or lack thereof. Gideon isn't subtle at all. He's like a two-year old who wants something and won't stop pouting until he gets it. He has a lot of pretty words and flashy gestures of love, but as he himself put it, romance isn't in his repertoire. If you're looking for a love story, Bared to You is not that. You won't find characters that come to the realisation of their feelings for each other through some intense emotional conflict. What you will find are two horny good-looking people intent on banging each other senseless who somehow, from the get go, have an urgent, desperate and unhealthy need for each other. How? Why? I'm still not sure.

OBSESSIVE POSSESSIVE STALKERISH BEHAVIOUR: As another reviewer mentioned, the cringe factor is pretty high in this book. If someone did what these characters do in real life, they would probably have restraining orders against them. For example, *** SPOILERS AHEAD - STOP READING HERE IF YOU HAVEN"T READ THE BOOK AND INTEND TO *** After Eva runs off from him the umpteenth time, he leaves Eva 21 messages in the space of about 30 minutes. 21. That's a lot of calls. Before that, he seems to have amassed all the information he can about her, from who she's living with (and his sexual orientation) through to whether or not her gym instructor is married. But Eva's no better because she signs up for Google alerts on his name. Like really? People do that? Later, Eva sends Gideon three, count them, THREE separate lots of flowers with messages in one day and then hand delivers him a gift. I mean, really? You don't think that's a tad bit much for just ONE day? I guess it isn't when your lover takes a photo of you sleeping in your own bedroom, then has your WHOLE bedroom recreated in his own home...to the detail. And that's just so when you need space, you can run off your to 'own' room without leaving his house. Eww. Eva's mother traces her cellphone, Gideon traces Eva's credit card - I mean, billionaires stalking people when they could be out yachting, travelling to exotic places, flying to the moon or whatever it is billionaires do?

Then there's the jealousy. Gideon is suspicious of any unfamiliar male that he hasn't got a file on and Eva is suspicious of every female in Gideon's life, even his mother (!!). Both characters are so insecure, their actions become laughable. ["Hello," he purred, his icy gaze on Martin. "Introduce us."] Sexy and possessive? Or just plain rude?

At the end of the day, I liked this book, but I didn't. Sylvia Day has made a good business decision to capitalise on 50 shades (which I haven't read because I didn't care for the kindle sample I received) and I still like her writing skills. She creates vivid scenes and has great command of language. But I'm not crazy about some aspects of 'Bared' so I probably won't read the rest of the series. I don't give a toss about Gideon's inner demons, and Eva seems to have it together (she's a likeable heroine). There were so many declarations of LOVE(from Eva) and NEED(from Gideon) that its already clear from this first instalment that the two will be sticking with each other through thick and thin while copulating fast and furiously. Glad I read part one, but not holding my breath for part II.

Better than Fifty Shades of Grey!

First off, I haven't written a review in a while. After reading BARED TO YOU by SYLVIA DAY I felt the need to.

If you're looking for a book similar To Fifty Shades of Grey by E.L. James then BARED TO YOU is THE BOOK! Some may think it's a rip of Fifty, but in my case I appreciate it for what it is... Two emotionally F'd up individuals hoping to find some kind of happiness. In my opinion I think it's better than Fifty Shades and it may have to do with Sylvia Day being a seasoned author. You can be the judge of that.

From the moment Eva and Gideon meet, there's a connection they can't resist. Initially it's a physical attraction that creates interest. They try to keep it casual, however one broken individual can recognize another and that's what Eva recognizes in Gideon. Although he tries to deny and in the process hurts Eva he always finds himself chasing after her because she sees him. Accepting the knowledge brings them closer, but not wiser regarding their relationship. They understand they'll need to take baby steps if they want their relationship to work. You do see them grow and learn from their mistakes.

How can two dysfunctional individuals make a relationship work? Their relationship is emotional, intense and complicated. They're obsessed, possessive and jealous of each other. Put all that together and the sex is explosive, their love is sweetly intoxicating, their relationship at times is stormy but when they're happy it's beautiful.

Will Eva have enough patience to overcome her frustrations with Gideon withholding his past from her? I hope so. Like Gideon, Eva and Cary (Eva's best friend), I myself is a part of the F'd up group so I can relate to their story. They all deserve their happily ever after as I have. ^_^

I can't wait for the next book, DEEPER IN YOU, to learn more about Gideon. My only hope is that it's not like Fifty Shades Darker. I love Fifty Shades of Grey, but in the second book, I felt as if I read the first book all over again. I have yet to read the third book.

This is the first book that I've read by Sylvia Day and I wasn't really sure what to expect. WOW!! After reading Bared To You, Sylvia Day has a new fan and I have a new favorite author!! I loved, loved, loved this book. Right from the start it grabbed me and drew me in and still hasn't let go. I finished it in one sitting, I just couldn't put it down. I fell in love with the Gideon and Eva right from the start.

Bared To You is the story of Eva and Gideon (great name for him). The story is told from Eva's point of view and I only wish that I could have heard it from Gideon's also. They are both extremely attractive and are instantly drawn to each other, but neither is looking for a relationship. Eva has just moved from San Diego to New York with her roommate. It is when she goes to her office building for the first time, that she runs into Gideon, literally, and their lives are forever changed. They each struggle with their own internal demons, insecurities, and past hurts. Through the story, each tries to overcome their issues as well as help each other. I love that Sylvia Day wrote these characters as not perfect, they both unintentionally made mistakes that hurt the other but they tried to learn from them and build on their relationship. Sylvia Day shows that relationships are hard and they take work and compromise from each person involved. It is not always sunshine and flowers, but when two people are meant to be together, it can be amazing. And their story is absolutely amazing, so much more then I expected and I loved every second.

I fell in love with Gideon, he is the ultimate Alpha Male, he says the best things to Eva. It was a good thing I read this on my Kindle, because in paperback I wouldn't have been surprised if the pages melted!! It has some of the HOTTEST, STEAMIEST, INTENSE, SEXIEST sex scenes that I have ever read!!

Eva and Gideon are perfect for each other and you can't help but root for them on their journey towards a happily ever after. There is a great entertaining cast of secondary characters that have me hoping for their happily ever after as well.

Silvia's website states that this is the first book in the Crossfire series that follows the emotional and romantic journey taken by Gideon Cross and Eva Tramell. Bared To You is an excellent start to the series. I am definitely along for the ride on Gideon and Eva's journey and eagerly await the next book. I highly recommend this book. It is absolutely a reread for me!!

The Hunt (Cage bk2)

I love this story. The more I read of this trilogy the more involved in it I get. The characters are rich and well developed. The plots are interesting and engaging. I don't see much difference between the humans and aliens in the morality sense, given that the humans are supposed to be lesser, which is what our characters struggle with continuously.
My biggest disappointment is that I have to wait for the next book.
The editing rates 4.5 stars with only small errors throughout.

I received the book a few days before it said it should be delivered. Once I got it, I finished in one night it was that GOOD. Love Megan Shepherd and her books, I could read them all day and not get bored of them and they are such an easy read too. Before I knew it I was already half way through the book. Excellent job to Megan Shepherd.

the Hunt picks up right where the Cage leaves off, the story line is compelling and thought provoking. I could not stop reading. Living in a zoo, mixed relationships, freedom, humanity are all explored through the characters. The only thing wrong with the Hunt; book2 is that book 3 is not out yet.

Richly detailed overview of modern evolutionary thought

I have used all three earlier editions of this text for my undergraduate 'Evolution' course (I am a college Professor of Biology) and have witnessed the various changes made over the years. The new version has updated much of the information on molecular evolution; the authors should be commended for their very thorough literature review. With the veritable explosion of research into evolutionary phenomena, this must be difficult indeed! The initial chapter on HIV still remains a wonderful introduction to your typically "human oriented" undergraduate and serves to generate interest in the topic early on. The phlogeny/evolutionary tree chapter was moved earlier to the "Introduction" part of the text; not sure why this was done. It was also nice to finally see mention made of reaction norms in the 'Adaptation' chapter (at last!), but there are still no examples of phenotypic plasticity from the vast botanical literature. The 'Evolution and Human Health' chapter is excellent for the medical student. Rather oddly, the important topic of speciation is near the book's end (Chapter 16) and glosses over the many fine examples from the plant evolution literature (polyploid speciation is virtually ignored, except for two paragraphs on p.159). My students are fascinated by the 'evolution of wheat' story, but don't look for that example of speciation here.

My primary complaint with this, and the preceding editions, is still the overwhelming amount of extraneous detail. How I wish I could use my editorial hand on this one! Does an undergraduate student really need over 20 pages on linkage disequilibrium? Are the final details of QTL mapping really necessary at this level of student education? Do we really need 4 pages on the 'fallacy' of the bell-curve (interesting advanced topic, but...) Also, there is an over abundance on phylogeny and systematics (useful for the future molecular systematist, but probably just confusing to the general biology major).

In any event, a great book, a little overwhelming, but well written and free of errors...I'll probably order the lastest (4th) edition anyway for the next 'Evolution' class...

Top notch evolution text for the undergraduate student

EVOLUTIONARY ANALYSIS (2nd ed) by Freeman and Herron hits the mark for an evolution text for the undergarduate student. It's not so thick that it's intimidating, but the contents cover the basics of evolutionary biology without being watered down.
The authors address topics of current interest (e.g., the evolution of HIV in Chapter 1) in drawing the student into the conversation about what evolution is, how it happens, and how you can demonstrate that it is happening.
Major sections of the book include the following:
1) An introduction to evolution: the HIV story, evidence for evolution, natural selection...
2) Mechanisms of evolutionary change: mutation, genetic drift, genetics, etc...
3) Adaptation: sexual selection, kin selection, social behavior, life history factors...
4) The History of Life: mechanisms of speciation, reconstructing evolutionary trees, origins and evolution of life through human evolution...
5) Current Research in Evolutionary Biology: development and evolution (a field that's really gaining momentum these days), molecular evolution, evolution and human health...
The authors touch all the important bases in this introductory text on evolution. The organization of material is logical, the tone is professional without being overbearing, there are many understandable examples, and the illustrations are excellent. Because of those factors, this new book appears to be a great text to teach from. There are wonderful reference texts out there about evolution, but most of them are not easy to teach or learn from. This book, however, helps students to learn, and provides ample material for instructors to use.
This is now my top choice for a textbook in evolution. This book is definitely worth 5 stars!

Worth the price

Looking at the price of this book you might precieve it as a bit expensive but don't be decieved. If you are taking an evolution course or just want to know about evolution, this is the easiest and most comprehensive read you can get. It has comprehensive chapters with page and chapter summeries and loads of examples. It made my course more enjoyable having it. If you're taking a course with this book, buy it. To get a full deck of full color item cards at less than $10 is a steal. To make these item cards more useful I would suggest putting cheap clear sleeves on them. Prior to the session write a code with dry erase marker on the back of the treasure they may encounter: 1A, 2B etc. etc. Then when giving party loot hand them a stack of these labeled cards. When the players identify an item check it off your list and have them hand the card back to you. This is a great way to keep track of loot for both the players and DM's and it gives the players a visual.

Not worth the money

The GameMastery Item cards are nearly useless as an rpg prop. These cards have a picture of a generic item on the front and a blank back for notes or descriptive text. The $10 retail price is way out of line for a glorified deck of playing cards with limited uses. Save your money and make your own.

If you really like props, check out garage sales for very cheap items to use (old costume jewelry, etc). They look better, last longer are far more appealing.

He works professionally in both film and video and has performed a wide range of duties on films, including producing, writing, directing, cinematography, and editing. Awesome filmmaking reference book

This is a truly marvelous reference book for anyone seriously interested in learning the art of filmmaking. I've got a shelf full of books on screenwriting, story and plot and character development, and other aspects of movie production, but none of them so fully pack the entire movie making process into one volume... Voice and Vision is amazing!

Voice and Vision is written with the generous, good-natured wisdom of an industry mentor... the friend we wish we had who's "been there and done that" and has the amazing stories to drive home points about lighting, miking, city permits, and a seemingly endless assortment of details beginners could easily get bogged down with. I loved reading the stories about a film crew who set up filming a scene involving some violence inside a convenience store... without first checking in with the local police. While it might seem such steps could be dispensed with in remote locations, passersby just might think an actual crime is taking place!

While my main interest in filmmaking is writing screenplays, I know the importance of fully understanding what it takes to bring a movie from pure idea to reality... and Voice and Vision makes a good case for the notion that good filmmaking requires proficiency in many skills, keeping a wide range of factors in mind. The advice is often pithy and concise... comfortable shoes? A must. Hiring the right actors for the parts? Essential. The writing isn't quite as terse or laconic as it is opinionated, and the reader gets a sense that these opinions have come from a wealth of experience.

I love the way Voice and Vision combines pictures and engaging examples in the form of real-life stories in every section of the book. I kept finding myself reading "just one more chapter" because I couldn't put the book down. Voice and Vision may be as valuable as a textbook, but it definitely won't put you to sleep while you read it late at night... it's a real page-turner!

Almost COMPLETE FILM PRODUCTION on a book!

This is a great book. In a nutshell, it discusses virtually every aspect of film production... from screenwriting all the way to post. And that's a lot to cover. In fact, this book covers so much, it is the size of a telephone book. So in that respect, THIS BOOK IS THE BEST! But...

...But the problem with this type of approach is that it never gets too deep into any subject - because the purpose is to give you a first, main introduction to film production as a whole. So this book is a GREAT CHOICE if you are looking for a first film book. It is PERFECT for the novice film student or someone who wants to have a general (but as wide as possible) about the aspects of producing a film.

Outside the book are important subjects you must look for in other books: film marketing, film distribution and budgeting (that here is only covered in general terms).

Here is a advice: get this book in order to get the wide picture... THEN you select the subjects you want/need to learn in more detail... AND THEN get another book dedicated to that/those subject.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

A film school between covers

If you woke up one morning wanting to become a filmmaker and asked me how, I would say read this book and implement its lessons. As it says in the introduction to the first edition, "the best way to learn about filmmaking is simply to make films". And with this book at your side, you will be introduced to every aspect of creating a film.

Everything begins with an idea, an idea that must be converted into a cinematic story. The first chapter is extraordinary as it discusses the process of taking an idea and creating a cinematic story around it. The book is profusely illustrated with examples of student, documentary and theatrical films that explore the concepts put forth in the text. There are many sidebars with interviews of filmmakers or the story behind a film or scene. The editing of this book is superb: it never comes across as dry or preachy. Rather it is loaded with a "can-do" spirit that doesn't minimize difficulties, but doesn't make them insurmountable either. Even some of the sidebars are perfectly attuned to this, such as this from Robert Rodriguez, famous for his low-budget hit "El Mariachi": "How do you make a cheap movie? Look around you, what do you have around you? . . . Your father owns a liquor store? Make a movie about a liquor store. . . . "

I am astounded by how much information the author has crammed into this 600 page volume. He covers everything - the nature of the screenplay (including its formatting), the visual language and aesthetics of cinema, going from script to visual plan, the nature of film and video and all the tools and processes that go into making a movie.

If you take this book, study it one page at a time, arrange to view the many films cited as examples and, as the advice dictates, make films, you'll learn how to make films. Whether or not they're films anyone else would want to watch is a different story, but you will definitely gain understanding of the process.
