Not worth buying free

There seems to be problems with transcribing some parts of books such as this. Throughout, the major turning points of the stories, which are quotes from either letters or newspaper articles, are completely missing. I am guessing that the missing sections appear in italics or some variant form.
This not the only book in which I have seen this -- makes the entire thing useless. The whole development of the story involves newspaper ads -- all of which are missing.

"The Stolen White Elephant" is a broad farce mocking the self-proclaimed omniscience of many fictional detectives, told entirely in the form of a series of ridiculous telegraphs. Revolving around the theft of a literal white elephant, the gift of the King of Siam, this manifestly absurd story is nevertheless modeled after the real life efforts of a blundering New York Police Department to recover the corpse of one Alexander T. Stewart, stolen from his family vault in 1878.

Has excellent chapters on business plans & pro-formas, but not the best guide to starting a business otherwise.

This book is dry and scholarly like a textbook as the title implies. It's not of much use to a small business or by any means covers a fraction of the things any business needs to know. The one area this bpbook is outstanding compared to others I've read about starting businesses, especially small ones is it's superior coverage of writing business plans and writing your pro-forma statement. For those two topics, it's essential reading unless you look for the info online.

Otherwise, Rieva Lesonsky's AWESOME "Start Your Own Business" is a TRUE encyclopedic resource covering virtually all aspects of starting any business, big or small, that is a "true MBA" on the subject. It covers many topics other books don't, especially this one, is an easy read that gets to the point, and only BOOKS on specific topics like e-commerce or accounting have much more to add.

This book seems to be taken from a similar text book by the authors and used in the Entrepreneurship 510 class at Devry University (just to be clear, my text book for this class is also by Bygrave and Zakarakis and simply entitled "Entrepreneurship" (my copy is a Devry ediion with the Devry cover on it but the text is actually from the authors above 2nd edition). Although the chapter layout is not quite the same, the text within it is the same. The ISBN on my book is 978-0-470-45037-6 (pbk).If you are planning on attending this school or notice that your Entrepreneurship class book has the same authors, I'd be wary of buying this book as I am certain that the information contained in both is extremely similar, just organized a little different.

A wonderful introduction to classical Confucianism

An excellent introduction to a topic often considered too fundamental to be worth writing about - the evolution of classical Confucianism. Professor Goldin points out that it is surprisingly difficult to come across quality, English-language introductions to confucian thought, a state of affairs that he has here made a great stride toward remedying. This book is short, as should be clear from the Amazon listing, but, with its generous citation of primary sources and lucid explication of the major ideas of Confucius, Mencius, and Xunzi, it nonetheless serves as a compelling guide to early Confucian thinking about people, the state, and the world. Much is made, and rightly so, of the differences between these three great classical Confucian thinkers, however slight they may sometimes seem when looked at in the context of the Warring States period, and by the end of the text, one has a fairly good understanding of the reasons why these thinkers diverged in their philosophical focus. Historical and intellectual context, while not given much separate attention in this volume, are addressed at least in passing in the discussions of each of these philosophers. Intellectual context is responsible in large part, to take the most conspicuous example, for Xunzi's propounding of a full-scale cosmological understanding of the Confucian way, which is sourced from nature itself and pervades all things. Many of his contemporaries had, unlike those of both Confucius and Mencius, been reading the Laozi, and subsequently placing considerable credence in its vision of an all-pervasive and unknowable way (dao). In order to maintain relevance, it was necessary for Xunzi, as it later became necessary for Neo-Confucians confronted with the popularity of Buddhism and Daoism in the 11th century, to propagate a theory that could level with those of competing philosophical traditions and successfully argue for the Confucian understanding of truth, or the right way.
There is also a short chapter that considers the Neo-Confucian movement of the Song, well over a millennium after the last of these classical Confucians, Xunzi, had died, as well as the place of Confucianism in the China of today. This chapter is still lucid and helpful, but is intended not as a complete guide to developments after the classical era, but merely as a small taste of later developments, perhaps goading students into reading more, or at least giving them basic knowledge of the most important intellectual shifts in Confucianism after the classical period.
To conclude, this is a wonderful book that is worthy of more attention than it has received, and is an excellent introduction to a philosophy and a number of philosophical orientations that have characterized much of Chinese civilization since the founding of the Empire. Buy this book!

Enlightening Read!

This was a very enlightening read. Although I personally prefer Western Philosophy I did enjoy reading Confucius. If you are thinking about getting it I highly encourage it.

About the Author
Margaret McMichael Langley has lived in North Carolina most of her life. She now hails from Goldsboro, N.C., and continues to work on the "graveyard shift." as an R.N. in a state hospital. She is married to Lew Langley, III. She is now working on another book that involves historic but haunted Cherry Hospital, another "insane asylum" that is still open and working to this day. Margaret enjoys photography, writing, and traveling. She has been interested in art, photography and writing for most of her life, but only recently wrote her first book, Haunted Broughton, Tales From The Graveyard Shift.

Good read!

Good read. My father and neighbors worked at Broughton and told some of these ghost stories. Main reason Dad left was an encounter he had in one of the tunnels. Best friend went down into one of the tunnels before the demolition began. He said he felt the presence of others while in there. He never believed in ghost until he visited that tunnel.

Haunted Broughton

As someone who is deeply interested in the paranormal I found this book to be of great insight! Each turning page keeps you on the edge of your seat as you read creepy tales of one of the most haunted buildings in western North Carolina. Included in the ghoulish tales you also recieve some knowledge in the history of psychiatric practices. I recommend this excellent book for anyone who is fascinated by the spooky world of the paranormal!
