Worth Reading...

As someone that can see the steam towers of Fermi 2 from my driveway, I was very interested in this book. Although it is very outdated and quite biased, it did turn me on to some reactor accidents I hadn't heard of and gave me a little more history of the area I live in. The accident at Fermi 1 was actually pretty small and the plant still runs (actually visited it 5 years ago). A good place to start if you are interested in this kind of thing and the book sells pretty cheap so it is worth the small amount of money.

We Almost Lost Tokyo--too

I found a paperback copy of this book in a used bookstore recently. While Fuller was a masterful storyteller, his science was shoddy which renders this book largely an exercise in "what if" thrill seeking and fear mongering. As in: What if radiation from U.S. and French H-bomb tests in the Pacific really mutated a never-before-known sea monster on the scale of Godzilla? What then, we ask, would have happened to downtown Tokyo when the monster came ashore? Recall the author's popular, bestselling book "The Interrupted Journey"? It supported Betty and Barney Hill's alleged 1961 alien abduction claims as revealed under hypnosis. Need we say more about Mr. Fuller's credibility as a skilled science writer? The author here prefers to focus on wild "what ifs" of a nuclear power plant accident that didn't even affect an area outside of the massive concrete containment structure of the Enrico Fermi Power Station. Ok, the reactor damage here was significant, but the breeder reactor as designed and described in the book could never have reached critical mass to explode like a nuclear bomb; not even close. The claim by the author is bogus and physically impossible. Fuller did not have any academic background in nuclear physics because in the case of this 1966 incident at Fermi 1, the engineered-in safety systems worked as designed, just as they did at Three Mile Island 13 years later. There's no need for handwringing of what might have happened or need to cite Chernobyl or Fukishima (those were two very different reactor design types with two very different accident scenarios as played out). Yes, we almost lost Detroit, but it was far more recently than the year 1966. Blame Detroit's near miss not on a "what if" core meltdown scenario, but rather on the "meltdown" of mismanagement--malfeasance and crony politics that can be traced right back to Detroit's legacy of corrupt and partisan city officials.

Granted the book is a bit sensational - then again I lived in Detroit at that time and you can bet I would have been hyper-ventilating had I known the China Syndrome was potentiating less than 60 miles away.

Here's the key point: if this was such an itty-bitty bang why was it NEVER mentioned until this book was published?

Rancho Seco, Celilo Village, the Hanford site, 3-mile Island, the USS Thresher -- all nuclear events that blew up in the press for days or weeks - yet NEVER CALLED FORTH A SINGLE MENTION OF FERMI #1.

Sounds like a cover-up to me - and the casual mention that 'a little bit of the core melted' is no small matter - if a little melts, a lot is not far behind and Bang! There goes Detroit!

Worth a read? Yeah. Worth paying attention to the neighborhood, too.

A choice read for armchair travelers, highly recommended

"Down the Road in Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam: A Bicycle Tour Through War, Genocide, and Forgiveness" is a memoir from Tim & Cindie Travis as they recount their ride through Southeast Asia and their particular adventures and misadventures. An exciting story well dotted with photographs, "Down the Road in Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam" is a choice read for armchair travelers, highly recommended.

FANTASTIC AS USUAL

This is the second of the Travis' books i have and i've had their first book as an audio book.
Makes an interseting read though it is a tad light on after reading the EXCELLENT two books by Alastair Humphries.
I was very impressed with the speedy delivery to me here in Australia - about the same time it takes a book to be delivered when bought domestically - very impressive indeed.

Sisters making love, how nasty. Twin sisters making love even nastier. I wasn't sure if this story would work but the author does a wonderful job. The sisters, Hailey and Paige, cross over to the forbidden side. And you think it's going to end right there but the story goes on and on.

The girls have multiple encounters each one hotter than the last. But it also feels quite natural. And the girls don't lose their interest in boys. Gee, why don't all twin sisters do this? The author does a wonderful job - of thoroughly exploring the topic. Enjoy.

Robert V. Kozinets is a globally recognized expert on social media, marketing, branding and innovation. Besides inventing netnography, he has authored and co-authored over 100 pieces of research on the intersection of technology, media, brands, and consumers.

Robert V. Kozinets is widely recognized as the inventor of netnography, and a social media marketing and research authority. He has authored and co-authored over 150 pieces of research, and hundreds more Tweets (@kozinets) and blog posts (kozinets.net), usually about the intersection of technology, media, brands, methods, institutions, and social groups. This includes four books―three of them Sage Method books. Currently, Kozinets is Associate Editor of the Journal of Consumer Research and the Journal of Retailing, an Academic Trustee of the Marketing Science Institute, and is the Industry seat on the Board of Directors of the Association for Consumer Research. On the industry side, he has extensive speaking, training, and consulting experience with a range of global companies and organizations, including HSBC, TD Banking and Financial Group, American Express, Merck, Sony, Nissan, eBay, Campbell Soup, and L’Oréal. An excellent resource

This book is an excellent resource for qualitative research in general, and truly the definitive guide for tackling research questions with an online component. The book is comprehensive, well organized and insightful. The entire research process is clearly articulated, and, importantly, the author also provides very concrete examples of how to move through stages of data analysis and interpretation - something that many research guides fail to do. In short: highly recommended!

Sadly disappointed

I was sadly disappointed by this book. I expected a book that would tell me about doing netnography using the modern Internet. All the examples used the old Usenet newsgroups. There was no information about doing ethnographic research with blogs. About 95% of the book could have been written 15-years ago and it was applicable then. It lacks awareness of how Web 2.0 changed the face of online communities.

An armchair journey to the City of Light

First, I need to say i received a free digital edition of this book from Reading Deals Review Club in exchange for an honest review. Second I want to say that I don't always enjoy the books they have on offer and am disappointed ina lot of their offerings. Third i want to say That's Paris! is an excellent anthology of stories based in the city of Paris! I thoroughly enjoyed it! There are stories from every taste from romance to history, from memoir to Gothic. Some are funny while others tug at the heartstrings. There are even a few stories with both an English and French version. I have never been to Paris and probably will never get the chance to visit that amazing city but the great thing about reading is books can take you there and you don't even have to leave your house! Finally I want to say That's Paris! is a great addition to any reader's French related books collection.

Book Review: THAT'S PARIS!: AN ANTHOLOGY

Ah, Paris.

Just the word evokes images that inspire the very essence of Europe, in all its splendor and insouciance, the laissez-faire lifestyle, the casual beauty, the easy unassuming atmosphere. From sunlit cafes to iconic architecture to some of the most unique social mores and some of the oddest laws in existence, the city of Paris is nothing if not wholly spectacular.

Welcome, then, to THAT'S PARIS!: AN ANTHOLOGY OF LIFE, LOVE AND SARCASM IN THE CITY OF LIGHT, to be released in Kindle edition on February 2 (print edition published just this month) by Velvet Morning Press.

Featuring essays, anecdotes, and personal stories, the anthology is an absolute triumph whose success lies in its ability to convey the dozens of facets that, together, comprise the sparkling gem that is the City of Light.

Some of the contributions are tongue-in-cheek, like "(Mis)Adventures at Sacre-Coeur" by Amy Lynne Hayes, who writes about the time she visited Paris with her ex and his new girlfriend (talk about awkward!).

Some contributions are self-deprecating, as are "The French Table, a Test of Mettle" by Audrey M. Chapuis (about her experience with French cuisine) and "Signs, Signs, Everywhere Signs" by Vicki Lesage (a roll-on-the-floor-in-sympathetic-laughter treatise of an odder aspect of French culture).

Some of the writing represents the more ridiculous ("This One Time in Paris" by Sarah del Rio) and some of it, the miraculous ("Half Past Midnight" by Didier Quemener). Often, the works are both touching and heartbreaking ("A Scoop of Henry" by Cheryl McAlister, or "Love Unlocked" by Adria J. Cimino, or "Les Urgences" by David Whitehouse).

Regardless of perspective or style, however, all of the additions to the anthology (of which there are many more, by an array of gifted authors) are powerfully insightful and eye-opening. Picture Paris in a thousand different ways, through a thousand different lenses, and you have imagined what That's Paris! achieves in a microcosm.

I sighed, chuckled, cried, and laughed until I cried as I read my way through the collection, one story at a time like one bite after another of a superb multifaceted meal, brilliantly prepared and impeccably served.

You'll never look at Paris the same way again. I promise.

This book is more valuable than a free annual carte d'orange

Not since Baldwin's Giovanni's Room has a book taken me to Paris is such a visceral way. Anyone who has ever studied, lived or visited Paris will immediately connect with the feelings of being so blatantly foreign yet wanting to blend in. One of my favorite stories, The Little Book of Funerals, captures an American's fascination with the Parisian sidewalk café. Why are French people so much better in every aspect at sitting outside, drinking and eating?
You may never be considered a Parisian if you are not born there but it's clear from That's Paris, foreigners, in the tradition of Baldwin, Hemingway and Stein, are better at observing and reporting on the magic in the city of lights. But this more recent lost generation of writers provides many more laughs.
This holiday season, everyone I know who has done a semester in Paris or anyone who has simply had a one night stand while on a French business trip, will be gifted That's Paris.
