Best Volume Yet

Alright so this volume finally starts to have Twin Star Exorcist branch out in something that is unique for the exorcist genre from VIZ (JUMP SQ Shueisha). I won't go into details to spoil the story, but the surprising direction it takes while balancing some comedy, some tears, some feelings of determination, despair and failure, it manages to feel like a story filled with a lot of heart. It also eases us into things well not coming out of the blue to introduce a power up randomly or something along those lines to build up to something bigger and better. It was a great volume.

Yuto really shines as an antagonist. He may have the same motivations as fifty other boys action manga antagonists but at least he has the sister Benio, and wants to at least recruit Rokuro (his childhood friend). I think hes refreshing because of these connections as well as his fairly playful though not too playful personality. Meanwhile Benio and Rokuro start to grow on us in their day to day interactions training and living together. The bonus chapter included as well as 4-koma help to develop their day to day lives and feelings about things well. I enjoyed it and I imagine it will be enjoyable for most readers. I think its just funny seeing them have this whole house on their own and how they deal with just eating or even cleaning up. It still remains unoriginal though since boys and girls living together as grade schoolers is filled with all sorts of awkwardness that we see in many other manga. The execution is at least fun.

Overall this is probably the best volume for the story and for its uniqueness. It may not be a truly original story but the ride is pretty fun.

Good volume.

An intense battle volume. First part has Benio and Rokuro practicing the new attack they can work together. Then the big battle with Benio's brother takes up the rest of the volume. He taunts them and wants more than just to kill them. They are surprised to find how strong he is and Benio ends up making a life or death decision which changes her life forever. The action and seriousness is lightened slightly by the usual bickering and hidden feelings between the two exorcists. Good volume.

Grim Prarie Tale

This book in the Lonsesome Dove series in the first, in chronological order. Gus and Call, called 'young pups' by their elders, have joined the Texas Rangers, hoping for some adventure (and for Gus, a little brothel action and card playing). Soon after their expedition begins, they discover they are in way over their heads. The Commanches are, literally, on the warpath, and hate white people (with good reason, considering the way the white men treated them). They are also very smart, very fast, very skilled in riding and fighting, and VERY bloodthirsty. The main Chief, who even the most hardened soldiers are scared of, is Buffalo Hump, and he is introduced in an unforgettable lightning storm on the prarie, in one of the most vivid, terrifying scenes in the entire series (and if you've read the series, you know things can get VERY ugly). The men in charge of the expedition are either crazy, stupid, drunk, have a very short fuse, or all of the above. The trek starts out rather confident, looking forward to the challenges to come, but soon realize they are no match for the Indians. The Commanches set up a variety of clever, deadly, devastating traps, and soon their ranks are halved, then quartered, then...then it gets REALLY ugly.
This book was a page-turner, and had all the entertaining characters a reader comes to expect from the series. All of the books treat death as an everyday thing, but I think this is one of the most cold-blooded; do not read if you're sqeamish. There's not just one or two nasty scenes, either, they count many and come fast. This is an entertaining book, one that I couldn't put down, but not especially pleasant. A good read, don't get me wrong, but one that is emotionally gruelling.
I guess if you wanted to read the books in chronological order, this would be the one to start. I had planned to do that originally, after I read LD, but have found reading them in the order they were written is actually more satisfying; backstory is filled in, and you get a better perspective.
If you loved LD, read this and the other books in the series. If you're just starting out, read LD first; it may be the strongest, but it will give you an idea of just what a treat you're in for. No ccomplaints here-I put the bok down after reading the last page, and promptly walked right over to my new copy of Commanche Moon (I wisely bought them at the same time) and started in.

In this book, I felt like the troubles were a bit forced and the ending abrupt. Still, I enjoy McMurtry's writing and the character development.

Great book at great price!

I really like this book - its no nonsense, non-anecdotal approach to the subject of directing is refreshing to me, since my library is mired in ego-heavy "Back when I directed my seminal production of ...." type literature. There is certainly a place for such books, but this guide is something different. It is aimed at directors, but I think would be helpful reading for anyone involved in the theatre, and can be read at almost any stage of development. Someone experienced in the field will find Caird's astute observations strangely reassuring and a beginner will gain lots of new information in small, approachable bites.

As with most single volume books in an A-Z type format, the entries just brush the surface of some subjects. But I love that you can find entries on subjects as diverse as Trap doors, Second-Nightishness, Nudity onstage and Child Actors. Definitely not in that order.

I bought this book at $20 and thought it was a tremendous bargain for the content -it's an even better purchase at the current amazon price.

A must have

What a pleasure it was to read this book. I learned more about being a director and performer from this, than from the thousands of dollars spent taking class in NY. As I am not a fan of the dry read, I opened this with a little trepidation, and was so pleasantly surprised. Mr. Caird writes with humor and intelligence and keeps you engaged from beginning to end. I immediately recommended it to other performer/directors that I know, and feel it should be required text in every college theater program. The wonderful thing is that this is a book I will go back to time and again with each different project I am attached to, whether it be as a performer or director. It is a MUST HAVE.

Comprehensive And Useful Guide For What It Takes To Put On A Show

Although this book was written for directors, every producer, indeed, everyone involved in theater could benefit from reading it. In my limited theatrical experience, I know that the smartest thing a producer can do, after obtaining the rights to a given show, is to get the right director. But what I didn't know was just how comprehensive his job is. The constant refrain you will read is how important each job is and how critical it is to make friends with all your support staff and to let them shine in their own right. Good advice for most professions.
The bottom line that John rightly focuses on is: What must be done to deliver the best possible experience for all audiences when seeing a given show. And that involves every decision that is made from what projects to accept, to which theater to rent, to which actors to cast, the sound system, lighting, sight lines, etc.
Theatre Craft is written authoritatively with intelligence and humor, even in it's title. For it actually is A Practical Companion from A to W, not Z.

this book is an excellant guide for anyone who is in the counseling position. this book gives the basis and guidelines of the addictive personality in all aspects. it puts truth to the matter. i highly recommend it to anyone who is recovering or who works in a clinical setting. a reference book i will always go back to.

The Well and the Mine is the story of one Depression-era family in an Alabama coal-mining town, and the single night that forever changes their view of the world around them. While the Moore family and their story are a product of my imagination, the world they live in was very real. It was a time and place shaped by the hard realities of poverty and racism, and there are still echoes of that world in the one we know today.

Let's start with 1931. Both banks in the coal-mining town of Carbon Hill had closed. The mining industry was close to shutting down, and 75 percent of the town's employment was tied to the mines. Property values were down 60 percent. For all the talk of an economic downturn now in 2009, the stark facts of the Great Depression highlight the gap between then and now. This was the Jim Crow South, with all the strictures of separate-but-not-equal in place. There was no Social Security, no disability, no Medicare or Medicaid, no aid for families with dependent children, no protection for unions. No heath insurance. It was, in large part, life without a safety net. And life was dangerous. If a man was killed in the mines, his widow and children could hope that neighbors or a charity or a church could offer help, but it was only a hope, there was no certainty. On the other side of hope was starvation and homelessness. Mining was demanding, mostly unregulated work. Each morning that a husband or father--there were no women in the mines yet--walked out the door, it was with a family acceptance of the chance that he might not come home. There was a very real chance that he could be killed during an average day's work. But that sense of life on a precipice is part of why this story appealed to me. In the midst of all the brutal labor and struggle and uncertainty, moments of beauty and transcendence have all the more power.

The plot of the book is entirely my invention. There was no baby thrown in a well, no investigation into the local mothers. Or at least none that I know of. But the people and the places do echo some real-life counterparts. Virgie, the Moore's oldest daughter, has my grandmother's sense of propriety. The youngest daughter, Tess, has my great-aunt's sense of fun. Their mother, Leta, has the efficiency and solidity of my great-grandmother, who died when she was 99 and I was 14. My great-grandfather, a coal-miner, died before I was born, but the stories about his razor-sharp sense of right and wrong are what gave Albert his backbone. My great-aunt still lives in the home my great-grandfather built, and I spent plenty of time in the house as I was writing this novel, sitting on the front porch and looking out over the woods, listening to the sound of the creek as I typed.

I grew up hearing stories about Carbon Hill in the 1920s and '30s being told across the dinner table or while sitting around the living room with my grandmother and her siblings. When I sat down to write the story of the fictional Moores, I delved back into my family's memories. Those memories helped bring 1931 rural Alabama to life--they gave me the sights and smells and the feel of the past. Bits and pieces of family lore found their way into the story, but also the domestic details and cultural perspectives that are hard to find in library books. Answers to questions like: What kind of underwear would you wear in 1931? What kind of floor cleaner would you use? How did a teenage girl feel about marriage? I never read good answers to those questions in library books, but I hear plenty of answers, simple and complicated, when I asked the right people.

And yet in the past, there are whispers of the future. The mining industry was unique in Alabama because it had an integrated workforce. In the mines, black men and white men worked side by side in the mines: It was a harbinger of things to come. Albert Moore wrestles with ideas of good and evil--of black and white--and comes face to face with complexities that haunt generations after him. Time and time again, he and the rest of his family struggle to do the right thing--and struggle all the harder to accept the fact that "right" may not always be such a concrete thing. It's that struggle, that drive to do what is fair and that need to see beyond their own perspective, that defines this family. And that struggle has as much relevance in 2009 as it did in 1931.

Superb Southern Novel from Debut Novelist

It's no wonder this book is getting huge buzz--it's a fantastic read that would appeal to anyone who loves Southern literature from the work of Fannie Flagg to Flannery O'Connor's; from Anne Rivers Siddon's books to William Faulkner novels. Really, this book appeals to anyone who loves a good story, rendered well. Phillips writing is somehow simultaneously fluid and hard-edged, and she knows her characters well enough to make their lives feel real to readers. This is one of the best books I've read in 2008. Highly recommended.

Too many narrators, jumps around too much.

This book is set in Alabama where I have lived all my life. It is about a family-Albert Moore, the father, Leta the mother, and the children, Virgie, Tess, and Jack. The book goes from each one of them being the narrator to another, on every one or two pages. Through that, we get the story but it was very disjointed.
At the beginning of the book, Tess, the youngest daughter sees a woman drop a baby down a well in their back yard. The rest of the book is trying to solve the mystery but it is intermingled with stories about the coal mines, poor families and their struggles, and the neighbors.
I got bogged down reading the book, and thought about giving up on it several times, but I continued. I would not recommend.

i find it impossible to believe that this is a debut novel. it's brilliant. i am stunned. just -- floored. everyone else has done a great job here of describing this story and its merits. what i cannot understand is how this writer has not been catapulted to fame, yet. this book should be in the window of every bookstore in america. it's absolutely flawless, a treasure. buy it for everyone you know as a christmas gift. yes. it's that good.

A Great Book on Beauty and God

Jonathan Edwards has seen a resurgence lately, especially among those writing dissertations and for good reason. Edward's thoughts are rich and full of promise for theologians looking to navigate their way through our post-Christian age. In this vein, The Beauty of the Triune God: The Theological Aesthetics of Jonathan Edwards by Kin Yip Louie holds promise for those seeking to explore what a Christian theory of aesthetic might look like.

Louie admits that his work is largely descriptive and not proscriptive. He explores Edwards' thinking on beauty and metaphysics, God, Christ and eschatology. This to me is the strength of the book since we get to hear from Edwards himself. Rather than a critique of Edwards, I felt that Louie treated the material fairly...even some of the more difficult areas like hell. In essence, Edwards held that hell could be perceived as beautiful since God's justice was being done. This is admittedly a difficult pill to swallow and yet Louie, without fully accepting Edwards' stance, still manages to salvage some pearls from the discussion.

The weakest part of the book to me was the conclusion. After surveying so much beauty in Edwards, I was a little disappointed with the lapse into discussion of art and the cultural mandate and its relationship to postmodernism. To me, Edwards' conception of beauty has much more to say to those engaged in politics, media, architecture, design, church leadership, missionaries, city planners and more. Yet these areas were essentially unexplored and Louie disappointingly steers us back to a narrow conception of art and music. For a work as broad and wonderful as this, I just felt a little cheated at the end.

However, that shouldn't prevent you from read this work. I loved it. There are many quotable lines and many, many moments where you will go "Wow...that's awesome!" For a dissertation-turned-book, I can't think of much higher praise.
