Commercial Banking: The management of risk

I have recommended this book to my students the past three years. Infact, it's the textbook for my Commercial Banking course. I guess a fourth edition is long overdue. The industry is so dynamic that constant review is the only way to remain current. Otherwise, it's an excellent resource.

About the Author
Thomas Magstadt earned his doctorate at the Johns Hopkins Schools of Advanced International Studies (SAIS). He is the author NATIONS AND GOVERNMENTS: COMPARATIVE POLITICS IN REGIONAL PERSPECTIVE, Sixth Edition, (Wadsworth Publishing, 2011), and AN EMPIRE IF YOU CAN KEEP IT: POWER AND PRINCIPLE IN AMERICAN FOREIGN POLICY (CQ Press, 2004). He has also published numerous journal articles, policy papers, and op-ed pieces, and is a regular contributor to Nation of Change, an on-line daily newspaper. He has chaired political science departments at Augustana College (Sioux Falls) and the University of Nebraska (Kearney), and has taught at the Thunderbird School, the Air War College, and the University of Missouri--Kansas City. In the 1980s, he served for a time as a foreign intelligence analyst at the Central Intelligence Agency. He was a Fulbright Scholar in the Czech Republic from 1994 to 1996. From 2007 to 2010, he lectured on the European Union at the University of Kansas.

I typed in 8th Edition and when I clicked on used it showed 3rd edition.Not knowing the cover I ended up with a third edition. Wrong Book! It would cost me more to return it than it worth. :(

The authors have developed and co-instructed environmental interpretation classes at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, College of Natural Resources for 30 years. This book is worth adding to your library on interpretive centers and planning. It isn't a how-to as much as an inspirational review of what is out there and how one may wish to adapt one's own interpretive project. Excellent photography outlines many of the principles of interpretive planning, site design and the history of various centers. I have no hesitation in endorsing this book as a useful addition to any interpretive collection, I was definitely able to glean some ideas for our project in the Orinoco River basin of Colombia.

The dark mysterious continent

When the Lion Feeds was truely a thrilling and realistic book. I grew up in South Africa and when I want to remember I read the wonderful stories Wilbur Smith has written. I have grown very fond of the Courtney Saga. Each character draws me into all the excitement that Africa has to offer. Sean Courtney who is the hero in this novel starts an historical journey through the African Bush. Almost all of Wilbur Smith's books show the beauty and mysteries that the the dark continent has to offer. When reading this novel I remember what it is like to appreciate such a marvelous landscape with all its treasures. Great reading filled with history and excitement.

Smiths first and still one of his best.....

This is was the first novel Wilbur Smith published and it begins the Courtney saga with a bang....almost literally. Disimiliar twins Sean and Garrick are hunting when an accidental shot from Sean cost Garrick one of his legs and then builds from there....The Zulu War, the opening of the gold fields of South Africa, building (and losing...) financial empires all sprawled across the vast canvas of Africa and Smith's love of the "Dark Continent" shows on nearly every page...Any book by Wilbur Smith is worth reading, it would truly be a crime to miss this one....

My beginning of a 30 year love affair with Africa through the eyes of Wilbur Smith

I was given this book in October 1975 by a friend who said, "Join me in a love of adventure, history and characters that become part of your very existence." I couldn't resist the challenge. I was drawn into the book and was immediately transported into another life. This book has everything. If you never read another author, you will be captivated with all Wilbur Smith books once you have read this one. I was. I have now read every one of his works, at least ten times each. I get through the whole collection and a year later, find myself returning to them again. Now I buy them as presents for the un-initiated.

Metabolomics: Methods and Protocols contains forward-looking protocols, which provide the essential groundwork for future efforts in elucidating the structure of the unknowns detected in metabolomic studies.

Part I of this volume focuses on GC-MS techniques; specifically, attention is given to metabolite profiling in blood plasma, construction and application of mass spectral and retention time index libraries, and metabolomic profiling of natural volatiles. In Part II, emphasis shifts to data integration and data mining techniques, and specific protocols discuss improving pattern recognition and biomarker selection for systems level approaches, and visualization and analysis of molecular and metabolomic data. Parts III, IV, and V examine the coupling of capillary electrophoresis and mass spectrometry, classical reversed phase liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, and electrochemical detection of metabolites using HPLC separations coupled with coulometric electrode array detectors. In Part VI, protocols for the determination of metabolic flux rates are presented and a theoretical framework for metabolic pathway network analysis is provided. The volume concludes with an examination of cutting-edge NMR protocols.

A Collaboration of Scholarly Approaches to Metabolomics

I bought this book because I'm really getting into the idea of Metabolomics and hoping to branch into it somewhere down the line.

I've been away from university science for some time and wasn't sure what I've been missing in terms of advancements and how the current technology I use may bleed into it.

I found the book to be helpful. Its kinda a specialized book but the format is one more of bringing together research papers into a small volume of work where you have the opportunity to read the many different techniques and protocols in detail based upon a protocol developed in a lab.

Its not a book really meant for those who are just beginning to get involved in metabolomics and the significance of it... nor is it good for someone who has limited experience in laboratory research before.

Its not a bad book, but you may find other books out there to be more appetizing.

Unorganized Crime

I have been using this book for my dissertation and as of yet I have found it very informative. As I am researching the way New Orleans was affected by the prohibition during the 1920s I have looked into a lot of other resources and this was by far the most helpful. There is very little written upon the subject of prohibition in New Orleans, however this book is extremely thorough and well referenced. The main arguments include that the Prohibition was a failure in New Orleans as a result of general public hostility to the prohibition laws as well as the inefficiency of the Probition Bureau in New Orleans itself. The main idea is that New Orleans were opposed to Prohibition as was the ring rule that ran New Orleans and therefore Prohibition was regarded by many as doomed to failure. Another key point that Vyhnanek makes is the fact that organised crime did not solidify as it did in many other cities. In comparison to cities such as Chicago where Al Capone managed to dominate illicit alcohol trade, no key figure or group emerged as such in New Orleans. Vyhnanek goes into great depth over the corruption surrounding the Old Regulars; the main political force in New Orleans at this point as well as looking at areas such as gambling, prostitution and drug abuse. The main impression that I received from reading this book is that although there were similarities between New Orleans and other major cities at this time there were also many differences and I am surprised there is not more written on this subject.

Very well researched… smooth read.

Just finished reading this book. I feel like it was very well researched and well written. Nice flow and easy to get through. I don't necessarily agree with some of the conclusions that the author comes to in regards to there being very little (if any) organized crime during that period. However, my opinion is less researched than this author's opinion. Either way, I was very pleased with this book and found it abundantly informative. Definitely a recommended read for anyone interested in early 20th century New Orleans.
