About the Author
Victor Terras is the Henry L. Goddard University Professor of Slavic Languages and Comparative Literature emeritus at Brown University. His many books include "Reading Dostoevsky," also published by the University of Wisconsin Press; "The Idiot: An Interpretation"; and "A History of Russian Literature," as well as translations of Dostoevsky7;s works.

Near Perfect One Volume Encyclopedia of Russian Literature

If you are a reader of Russian Literature, or simply a lover of encyclopedias, dictionaries and other reference works, "Handbook of Russian Literature" is something you might want in your library. The "Handbook" has nearly one thousand entries, large and small, providing comprehensive coverage, in a single volume, of every aspect of Russian literature during the past ten centuries. A large format book with small print and double columns on each page, the "Handbook" contains entries written by over one hundred leading scholars and ably edited by Victor Terras.
The entries range from one or two lines to several thousand words over several pages. There are biographical entries of Russian authors, little and well known, as well as entries on various genres, historical periods, literary movements, literary journals and periodicals, and critical theories. Each entry includes a bibliography and, in addition, there is a useful general bibliography, broken out by historical periods, at the end of the book. The "Handbook" is, in other words, a perfect reference and entrée into the world of Russian literature. I find myself dipping into this book often, at random, and never fail to learn something new and interesting. I also use it as a valuable source of background reading when I sit down to read a Russian author.
The only shortcomings of the "Handbook" are that its print is very small (allowing the book, of course, to cram an immense amount of information in less than 600 pages) and that it devotes little coverage to authors of roughly the last quarter of the twentieth century, including some of the so-called "dissident" authors who wrote in the years immediately preceding publication (a shortcoming, however, that is excusable because most of the research for the "Handbook" was done in the early 1980s and the book was published in 1985). Also, while the bibliographies are useful for the casual reader, serious research requires reference to more recent sources.

A Great Resource

This is a great book for anybody who is studying or likes reading Russian Literature. It has an informative article on practically every Russian writer that you'll need to know about, although a few of the more contemporary ones are omitted.
In addition to providing a thorough biographical sketch for each author, it also mentions the major works of each author and gives critical opinions and brief analyses of many of the works. The major translations available are listed at the end of each entry.
I like reading the sketch on an author before I begin reading his or her work. It provides a great introduction.

Too simplified summaries on too many topics

This book summaries communication theories in both human communication and mass communication areas. It's a nice job but it is a kind of lecture note for undergraduate students or for graduate students who want to review theories for midterm or final exam. If you are an instructer, this book is not a bad choice, because your student will have a good summary-version of theories.

I honestly thought this was a smaller book. I was more or less getting it to qualify for Super Saver Shipping on another item =P. Discovering that it was a 2-volume, large pictured, high quality books I was excited to go through it. I would definitely recommend this item to anyone with an architectural career, background, or even just an enthusiast.

Good but not great

This set has A LOT of houses. It covers some of the main starchitects working on a less glamourous approach, since they had to shift from public and monumental spaces to the intimate and particular programs which is implied in the unifamiliar house.

Still, there is a LOT of information missing. There are some projects in the book that have 2 or 3 pictures... no sections, plans, they don't have anything.

After all, I'm happy with it. It has a good price and it is gonna help me out throughout my life.

Total page-turner.

It's two volumes of beautiful pictures and descriptions of both the architect(s) and the design itself. I own many design books, some more for learning purposes, and others because I simply enjoy architectural eye candy. In this case, the books are larger with big color-print photos, and there are houses featured that I haven't seen before. It's not the ultimate best I've ever seen, but it's certainly far from the worst.

In "Honest Doubt", Richard Holloway considers some of the universal questions about our existence and the meaning of life, and how some of humanity's best thinkers and most creative writers have approached these 'literally life and death questions'. In exploring the relationship between faith and doubt over the last 3000 years, he looks at its impact from the birth of religious thinking, through the Old and New Testaments, the Middle Ages, the Reformation, the Enlightenment, the Victorian period, the horrors of World War II, right up to today.

Celebrating unknowingness

This is about religious doubt. I very much enjoyed the series when it was first broadcast last year on BBC Radio 4. Reading the transcript has allowed me to stop and think, and above all to revel in the state of unknowingness. Gods seem to have been dying almost as soon as they emerged from the twilight of humanity's consciousness; yet their creation was a pivotal event in recognising the Other (as Feuerbach cogently argued). Perhaps an honest doubt is that indispensable Other of faith? As Richard Holloway says: "doubt is coactive with faith - they are two sides of the same coin".

In the hands of great poets and writers (e.g. Tennyson, Keats, Dostoyevsky), thinkers (Voltaire, Nietzsche, Wittgenstein) and scientists (Copernicus, Newton, Darwin), doubt is elevated to the summit of human thought. Tennyson's wonderful poem In Memoriam was an inspiration for the series' title:

"There lives more faith in honest doubt,
Believe me, than in half the creeds."

It is doubt - not certainty - that has made humanity what it is. Certainty has had a paralysing effect not just on religion but also on science, and 'the golden calves' of science (with an air of awe-inspiring 'evidence') can be ever so alluring. Those who challenge any entrenched paradigm are in for a lot of flak: burning at stake, derision, ostracism. Yet, paradoxically, it's the doubters and the challengers that keep human thought alive!

Richard Holloway and his collaborators impress me greatly not only with their humility towards the mystery of existence but also with their sincere respect towards a reader/listener. They communicate thoughts in a clear yet poetic language, without a shade of patronising or hubris. In their hands, doubt is not only honest, it is also superbly modest.
