Excellent Choice for the Non-Math Student

This is a magnificant calculus book. It is aimed at students in business, the social sciences, and the life sciences. This is done by first the examples and problems. But perhaps even more important the wording of the text is such that these students will understand what they are trying to convey and to clearly show them how calculus can be used to solve problems in their particular field.

At the beginning of the book, three pages of the Preface, the applications discussed in the text are listed by: Business and Economics, Life Sciences and Ecology, Social Sciences, Physical Sciences. Under these headings are subjects like: Value of a Car, AIDS, Cancer Rates, Abortion Rate and so on. These are subjects that will have some interest and applicability to students rather than the old traditional problems like water flowing into and out of a bucket that used to be the mainstream of teaching calculus.

Finally, calculus marks a transition in the study of mathematics for a student. Up until now he studied arithmetic every year in school, maybe he finally got to a bit of algebra and trig. Now he is exposed to a whole new world of ways to handle problems that go beyond anything he has seen before. This book eases the student into an understanding of how to approach these problems better than any I've seen.

Great Book, Great Price

I took calculus years ago in college and couldn't remember any of it, which is why I bought this book. This book is very easy to understand and is well written. Tons of real world examples, with solutions. If anyone has not yet taken calculus and wants to prepare for a college level calculus coarse, regardless if you are going to take applied or engineering calculus, this book is well worth it. .

A True "Criminal Minds" Story

This is frankly one of the most interesting books ever written. I am from South Carolina and grew up in the area where Gaskins committed his so called Coastal Kills. I've read many books written about serial killers and this is truly one of the most interesting. An alternate title for this book could be "How to Raise a Serial Killer from Cradle to Grave." This book is graphic and shocking and not for the weak of stomach. Gaskins spares no details in his descriptions of his many murders and tortures. He also spares no details about the childhood that he lived before becoming the monster he grew up to be. The most amazing twist (and believe me there are plenty twists) to the story of Gaskins is that he wasn't executed by the State of South Carolina for any of the tortuous murders he claimed to have committed, he was executed by the State of South Carolina for killing an inmate who was already on death row. You will shake your head in disgust and you will shake your head in amazement as you read this book. The images left in my head after reading this book will stay with me forever. The messages left behind in this book should be debated for many years to come. As troubling as this story is, it will make you think hard about everything from crime and punishment in the United States, to the Death penalty , to the extreme gaps that exist between poverty and wealth in America. One thing is for sure, once you start to read this book, you won't be able to put it down.

Personally, I believe there are people in this world who are abosulutley unredeemable human beings. Gaskins is a perfect example of such a person. The big debate though that will forever be pondered is "Was it nature or nurture?" The world may never know, and there are many people who really don't care. Gaskins is gone forever, but if you believe his story, sadly there are many more people like him walking amonst us. Read this book.

Disturbing book about a disturbing killer

Pee Wee Gaskins is probably the most infamous serial killer in South Carolina history. This "as-told-to" book was published posthumously. I've talked to a number of people over the years who knew Pee Wee personally and/or worked on his cases in some capacity. He was not known for telling the truth, so despite the fact that he supposedly had nothing to lose by delaying publication until after his execution, most people I have talked to believe he greatly exaggerated the number of people he claims to have killed in this book. Having said that, if even half of what he claims is true, this is still one of the most disturbing true-crime books I have ever read. Parts of it left me chilled to the bone. It also helps answer the question of what causes a human mind to go so bad. After reading about his up-bringing, you realize that a deeply disturbed mind is often the result of a deeply disturbed childhood. This book should be read by anyone who is interested in delving into the psyche of a serial killer. However, I don't recommend reading it before going to sleep at night. Your dreams are going to be troubled for a while.

I would recommend this book if you are interested in serial killers ...

The price was too high in my opinion, but I bought it anyway. It's very graphic and anyone considering buying it needs to know that. I was expecting some messed up stuff, but some of it was just whoa. I'm a Psychologist and I found it fascinating. It really shows you his pathology and is a direct window into what a serial killer thinks. I would recommend this book if you are interested in serial killers and if you are into Psychology. I just want to reiterate that this book is very graphic.

About the Author
Dr. Scott Patten obtained an MD from the University of Alberta in 1986, and subsequently completed an FRCPC in psychiatry (1991) and a PhD in epidemiology (1994) at the University of Calgary. He is a professor in the department of Community Health Sciences at the University of Calgary and is a senior health scholar with Alberta Innovates, Health Solutions. He has over 20 years experience teaching epidemiology and supervising graduate students. As a researcher, he has published more than 400 scientific papers and is the editor-in-chief of the Canadian Journal of Psychiatry.

Excellent

I am finishing my master's degree in health science and epidemiology - a meta-analysis dissertation accomplished - and I can say this is in fact an excellent book. It may be the best introductory textbook about clinical epidemiology, particularly for those interested in its Canadian issues. It fits very well on the shelf with great books of the field such as Guyatt's Users' Guides to the Medical Literature and Woodward's Epidemiology.

Mostly good, fascinating at times, but perhaps not a “starting point”

This is a good book and it is even fascinating at times, about the beginning of the Spanish “Reconquista” from 1031 and the end of the Caliphate, up to the middle of the 12th century. There are a few shortcomings and limitations, however, and I will begin by these, before mentioning its numerous qualities.

One possible limitation for a number of readers is that the book is a piece of scholarship. The author obviously knows his period and has published extensively on it. However, readers with a general interest might feel somewhat overwhelmed at times with the level of detail included in the book, and the bewildering sequences of towns and castles besieged and taken back and forth from each side.

A related element of complexity is that “each side” did not necessarily mean Christians against Muslims, especially during the first part of the period, up to the First Crusade. In many cases, Christians fought between themselves, with dynastic struggles between the potential heirs of kings being especially frequent. Such struggles were also common among Muslims and their Taifa successor states. A rather typical illustration is that of “El Cid”, who fought both for and against Christians and Muslims, depending on circumstances and on his own interests.

All this is shown rather well and described in much detail by Bernard Reilly, and so is the growing religious dimension of the Christian versus Muslim struggle with the irruption of the somewhat fanatical Murabit in Spain and the growing importance of the armed help from Crusaders from the other side of the Pyrenees. The end result, however, is that this book, however remarkable, is perhaps not the best “starting point” for “beginners” with little prior knowledge of the period.

A somewhat related point is that the level of detail and the sheer complexity of events tend to mask the main points. In particular, it is rather clear that the Christian realms started by being much smaller, poorer, and more scarcely populated that the Muslim states.

Curiously, the later preferred to “buy protection” through the payment of tribute that they could well afford to their Christian neighbours, rather than fight them. Although the author’s hints and implies that the later were more aggressive and the Muslim States, including the Murabit Empire, were somewhat more instable, he never really discusses and explains in a comprehensive way the reasons that underpin what he very correctly terms “the preponderance of the Christian North” which was achieved by the end of the period.

Having mentioned these points and presented them as limitations, it is also fair to state that many of them could also be seen in a different light. The luxury of detail is particularly valuable in helping to explain the emergence of Christian society of the Spanish North and “the two cultures of 12th century Spain”, to paraphrase the title of the author’s final chapter.

Another related strongpoint is that this book contains far more than just a narrative of the main events. It also includes an analysis of how Christian and Muslim Spains (both being plural) evolved, and how their society, and the associated populations and economics changed over the period, particularly in the case of the Christians. In addition, the cultural and technological influences and transfers between the various components of medieval Spain, but also the influences from outside - the papacy and the development of monastic orders (the Benedictines and the Cistercians, in particular, but also the Military Orders), France and North Africa – are carefully described.

All in all, and in addition to narrating the first stages of what became the Christian “Reconquista” and showing how complex these were, this book paints the picture of vibrant societies that had complex interrelations and mutual influences in both war and peace, although the balance of power, little by little, and despite setbacks, tilted towards the North. Not a starting point, neither an ending point

I first recommended the previous review by JPS, which clearly tells the "scholarship" of this book and the fact that it is not recommended for a beginner with an amateur interest in this part of history. However, I consider myself beyond this level, and such piece of "scholarship" is exactly matching my capability. I also share with JPS's positive evaluation of this book's quality of narrative and analysis. Therefore, from my point of view, I would like to give 5 star to this book. But before giving the reason of one star missing, I would like to strongly suggest, that all history writers, all of them, should think about a way to show the level of his or her book in THE TITLE. This will tremendously save the time and money of your potential readers in different levels. The current title of this book, as many of others, sounds so harmless and attractive to everyone, but its academic way of writing (although already mildly), as many of others, would really freak out many buyers.

Now the missing star.

When I put in my title "neither an ending point", I am NOT complaining that existing analysis is yet deep enough, BUT about the very unbalanced effort devoted to Christian states and Muslim states in Iberia. When I saw the title "Contest of Christian and Muslim Spain", I expected an equal amount of narrative and analysis for both sides and felt excited about it. But by simply looking at the table of contents, it became immediately dubious whether the author took his title seriously. There is not one complete chapter devoted for the Muslim point of view. The author provide some narratives about the rise of Murabit Empire, but it is assigned together with "the other Spains (meaning Aragon, Navarre and Barcelona), and only occupying one section of one chapter. The rise of Muwahid is even briefer and the most unacceptable part is the negligence of the taifa kingdoms. In the first chapter, the author spent only one paragraph for each major taifa and concluded something like "their history is petty". Later on, they are only mentioned as the exploits of reconquista but never enjoyed their own perspectives for the narratives. For a similar situation, when an event involves say both Leon-Castilla and Aragon, the author would not bother to repeat the story from two perspectives in two chapters. Now, the author frankly admitted that these "petty taifa kingdoms" possessed big cities like Sevilla, Toledo and Zaragoza, with each single of them having a population exceeding the sum of all the so called "cities" controlled by Christian kings. So when he traced the politics of mountainous Basque country in details, he called the politics in Sevilla "petty" and neglected it... Got to be kidding me!

In fact, checking the list of publications of the author it's not hard to find out that his major interests are indeed only focused on the Christian kingdoms in this period. I believe he is lack of strength to provide narratives and analysis of Muslim Spain of same quality as those of Christian Spain. However, as one episode of the series of "A History of Spain", this book could not honestly claim that it is mainly dealing with only one side of the story.

Anyhow, I want to say thank you to author, since his one-sided story is indeed fascinating, but this is not an ending point for me to know the history of this period and I am already on my way searching a book of "the other side".

About the Author
Alice LaPlante teaches creative writing at San Francisco State University and Stanford University, where she is a former Wallace Stegner Fellow. Her fiction has been published in the Southwest Review, Epoch, and Stanford Magazine, and her nonfiction has been published in Discover, BusinessWeek, and the San Jose Mercury News, among other publications. She lives in Palo Alto, California.

Nuances in Creative Writing

Author LaPlante's textbook Method and Madness--The Making of a Story is a textbook you will not put down. You will be surprised to find new twists and turns on the subject and the various ideas of writing a short story, a novel or a novelette. For example, I was surprised and at first shocked to find out the everlasting dictum of "show and don't tell" have been misinterpreted. This is because high school professors and even college professors who continue to teach their students not to "tell" when writing, but to concentrate on "showing". LaPlante explains the "Show and Tell" idea in a clear understandable and clear way. This concept is explained in Chapter 5 under the subheading of, "Why You Need to Show and Tell--Dramatizing and Narrating". The chapter, as well as the rest of the chapters, is followed by a set of exercises the student and or reader may undertake in order to understand the nuances of the chapter. The exercises are followed by two short story readings. In this chapter, the reader is introduced to the short story titled, "Brownies" by ZZ Packer and "Everything That Rises Must Converge" by Flannery O'Connor. Both short stories complement the "Show and Tell" ideas explained in the given chapter.

The textbook consist of fourteen chapters, an anthology of ten stories and thirty-nine readings. The chapters are as follows:

Chapter 3, Details Details--The Basic Building Blocks

This textbook is much better organized and developed than "Writing Fiction: A Guide to Narrative Craft" by Janet Burroway. For your peace of mind, examine the reviews on both textbooks. Even the anthology of stories and short story readings included in "Method and Madness" are superb, interesting, and hard to put down. The reader will want more of the story once he or she has finished the two readings included after every chapter. All readings left me thinking further and with the wish to continue exploring other works from the given authors. Tim O'Brien's short story titled, "The Things They Carried" had a profound effect on me. "The Bees" by Dan Chaon is another of the many readings, which is not only suspenseful, but it left me thinking of the ending. All of the thirty-nine readings are superb and interesting.

As a writer, and or student, you will not get rid of this textbook after you finish studying it. I guarantee you will decide to keep it next to your writing desk and often refer to it. It will come in handy as you develop your novel, short story, and novelette or to refresh your memory on the many writing concepts clearly and expertly described by author Alice LaPlante.

I strongly recommend this textbook for creative writing students and to interested readers who like to learn more of the art of creative writing.

A Utterly Superb Text

I had to buy this book for a short story workshop I enrolled in. I wasn't expecting much, having had lots of creative writing textbooks assigned by a lot of teachers, and frankly found them all to be boring and not-very-helpful. This one just blew me away. I thought I "knew it all" -- but LaPlante keeps challenging conventional wisdom. She gives you the deepest, most masterful explanations of craft I've ever encountered -- and then encourages you to make up your mind about how to use these tools. No imposing of narrow-minded rules that you all too often get in workshops. I have to admit, it made me want to go back and tell former colleagues in workshops...wait! I was wrong about that! The readings are great, but what I find especially useful are the examples. LaPlante doesn't ever tell you anything without fully illustrating it with an excerpt -- whether from a published masterpiece or from a student's work. So you're always grounded. Get this book. You'll be as grateful as I am to the teacher who assigned it.

Buy the non-textbook version!

During LePlante's May 21, 2014 appearance on "Writers on Writing", she stated this textbook is EXACTLY the same as her other writing book, _The Making of a Story: A Norton Guide to Creative Writing_. Even LaPlante doesn't use the textbook version when she teaches. Save yourself the ridiculous $30 mark-up by buying the trade paperback instead for less than $20.
