This book changed my life

I would highly recommend this book for medical professionals, parents, and obviously people with diabetes. I consider myself to be fairly comfortable with my diabetes management, but I've been unhappy with my A1c and my control in general lately. I would say getting a cgm was the biggest improvement followed by this book and more frequent endocrinologist appointments. The book discusses the theory as well as the nuts and bolts of logistically figuring out insulin sensitivity, nutrition, and strategies for trouble shooting basal rates, etc. I've been trying to figure out some differences I've been observing in insulin duration and it was a big help.

My only complaint about the book is that some of the charts are difficult to read on the kindle format. Not the author's fault, but my insulin pump (Tandem TSlim) and CGM (Dexcom G4) were released after this edition was published.

Buy in physical format only

I love my Kindle and the convenience of being able to carry multiple books with me all the time. This is the first time I've ever returned a Kindle book. The book contained a lot of useful information, but in the Kindle format, at the size font I was using, the charts and tables were extremely hard to read and follow. While you could "zoom" the charts so they were on the screen by themselves, it was still difficult to switch between a chart and the text that referenced it. As advised in the title of this review, I will probably re-purchase it in physical format.

A wealth of information.

I am getting ready to go on the insulin pump and someone had recommended this book. It has so much information for first timers and even seasonal users. It answered a lot of my questions and general concern I had. It is a great reference tool to have too.

mediocre...

I liked this book all the way until about 20 percent.. Then everything got a bit awry and confusing. The characters personalities shrivel and finally die!SPOILER ALERT! Chevie becomes all mopey and miserable and becomes obsessive about Riley! Its Riley and couldve had something we could of looovveeddd each other.. BUT no were doomed and it will NEVER happen! What happened to her fiery confidence! Shed been in way worse situations than this! The plot becomes all muddled and confusing and completely far fetched! Compared to this superman is realistic! And when ''Caspar the friendly ghost''(ridiculous) explains the inter dimension thing I had no idea what was going on and I dont think colfer did either... The ending was beyond weird.. Chevie becomes this weird mystical granny... It also seems that chevie and Rileys medlings in the past havent affected the present day at ALL! The reason why I gave this 3 stars was because its fast paced there are some great new characters and yeah thats it! I recommend this to people who wanna finish the series... Also to everyone because the first 2 were so good! I hope that colfer comes with something brilliant and witty like artemis fowl in the future he is actually a brilliant author!

Third, and possibly last, in the W.A.R.P. science fiction thriller series for middle-grade readers that is revolving around the very-young Special Agent Chevie Savano and her unexpected Victorian partner, Riley.

My Take
Jailed prisoners of today have no idea how good they have it!

The Forever Man threw me backwards and forwards in so many ways. It was horrifying and hilarious, and ended with simply sad. So much loss in so many ways. The witchfinding mentality of Mandrake was appalling. Talk about a bunch of sheep. On the other hand, the Mandrake FBI field office was pretty amazing. It's a shame Chevie had to happen to it. Arghh. I do hate that heroic-act-without-thinking trope.

It is also confusing with all that back and forth of the past intermixed with the future and the various presents. Yeah, more than one present, and I don't mean gifts. Contributing to the confusion is the dead professor whose ghost is alive and intellectually active with life still to come.

Using the holding trap as an opportunity for Riley to recap his past with Garrick was fascinating in a macabre way while the end was interesting and nebulous. That wormhole has worked some unexpected changes in Chevie, and it could actually be the end, or it could be the start of a new stage in Chevie's life with potential for a partnership? Maybe??

The Story
A desperate hope to find and save his half-brother ends with Riley, Chevie, and Garrick falling through time to the witch-obsessed village of Mandrake. It doesn't help Chevie's case in 1647 that the wormhole is changing Chevie into a cat.

Luckily, the professor's messing about is bringing time travelers to Mandrake. Unluckily, the professor's messing about is close to bringing about the end of the world.

"Only kill the innocent."

The Characters
Chevron "Chevie" Savano, a Shawnee Native American, is a juvenile consultant with the FBI who traveled to the past to fix the future. And her body is changing. Riley is a fourteen-year-old Victorian orphan who trapped his really evil master, Garrick, in the time tunnel.

In 1647, Mandrake's Groan, Huntingdonshire, England, is…
…a Puritan community of 48 brick houses where Albert Garrick, a psychotic Victorian assassin who has also been known as the Red Glove, a murderous magician, is known as the Witchfinder. Only one of the many lives he's lived since Riley threw him into a wormhole in 1899.

The humorless, power-mad Godfrey Cryer is the town crier, constable, and the last disciple of the Witchfinder. Thomas Cutler and Ben are two of the guards. Jeronimo Woulfe is a mason and brick worker. Lizzie is Jeronimo's pretty daughter, and Anna is his wife. Master Baldwin Sherry is the silversmith. Bartleby Primly is the richest merchant in town and has twin sons: Randall and Henry. Women who were victimized included Millicent Lewis, a gentle midwife, and Christabella Clopton. Matthew Hopkins is the Witchfinder General.

The stranded FBI team
Fairbrother Isles, a.k.a., Fender Rhodes Isles, seems to be an African dullard with hopes for his coded name. His partner, Donald Pointer, hardly qualifies as human company anymore. Professor Charles Smart is a quantum physicist who, at the end of the twentieth century, discovered how to access wormholes, Einstein Bridges. The Hobbit Hole is an emergency hideout.

1899 London
Tom "Ginger" Riley is Riley's lost half-brother. Sir James Maccabee is London's most feared attorney, and he's afraid of his Lurker. Tartan Nancy Grimes is a prison negotiator, a wheedler. Broadband is a guard at Newgate Prison. Otto Malarkey. Bob Winkle is Riley's assistant. Redmond is his name.

W.A.R.P. is the FBI's Witness Anonymous Relocation Program that stashes federal witnesses in the past. One problem with those wormholes? Not everyone comes out the way they went in, although silver helps. Cord Vallicose had been an instructor at Quantico. Rosa Fuentes got a bad end of the deal with the wormhole; she had been partnered with Agent William Riley to look after a Mob banker. Olaf the Boar is another victim of the wormhole.

The Devil's Brew is a method of execution that involves pouring molten silver down the prisoner's throat.

Twists & turns of past and future

Oh the twists and turn this book took! Some where way out there and some made sense. Why did Chevie save her dad but not her mother? How did she eliminate the cat eyes, when she couldn't before? Why did she not die if she lived past 100 but became young again into the past? Ok, you get the point...its a good series but it takes a while to like the characters...lot more darkness than Artemis Fowl but I wouldn't mind a few more books in this series!

If you are reading this book and not reading this, then You are missing a lot.

The author starts from His own personal experience about charisma(Extremly short account, but driving the point)
and goes on to tell about the importance of the factor which can make your life more fulfilling.

Some of the important points I see this book has are,

Another awesome book!

Another awesome book by Akash Karia! Folks, if you want an easy, straight-forward, quick-read that *will* make you more charismatic, this is your book! I love Akash's down-to-Earth voice, and what an awesome teacher he is. I literally glean multiple nuggets of information from each page! My favorite techniques from this book and the hand gestures (steepled hands make you out as an expert, hands clasped in front of the body say you're nervous, and touching your face or neck says you feel unsure of yourself) and the reminder to ask the right kind of questions and LISTEN! It's so counter-intuitive but so true! Although it is difficult to believe, I love how Akash unveils that he, too, was a shy child and has overcome it! An excellent read!

If everyone read this book and followed the exercises the world would be a better place. Many of the tips are not new but they are presented in a very easy style that is simple to follow with nice examples. I particularly like the areas around likeability and authenticity. Little unsure about the Ha Ha technique around improving your sense of humour as there is nothing worse than someone with no sense of humour trying to be funny but that said it might be worth giving even that a try. Highly recommended.

Thought-provoking analysis of the cultural landscape

I'm a big fan of Grant McCracken's blog, so I was eagerly anticipating his new book, which postulates that, as he titles his preface, "Entertainment is dead, long live Transformation". Instead of passively watching entertainment, people have become active consumers of the world around them, using ideas from all cultures to drive change within themselves. McCracken traces transformation possibilities throughout history, starting with tribal ritualistic transformations of rites of passage, passing through the industrial conception of working to improve one's social status by imitating the upper class, on to the 50s warring transformations of beatnik dropout culture vs. technophilic "brightwork" culture, and then to the postmodern transformations available to us today. We have moved from a world where one's birth determined one's destiny (sons of tailors became tailors) to one where we reinvent ourselves on an ongoing basis. McCracken takes the reader on a tour of several categories of postmodern transformations, including the capitalistic swift self and the Eastern-philosophy leaning radiant self. I highly recommend this book - it's so dense with new ideas and incisive observations that every few pages I would have to put it down and think for a while.

Fun to read, but lacking a persuasive thesis

I can't be as enthusiastic as the three earlier reviewers. While
McCracken has insightful analyses of trends in the arts, and I picked
up some interesting observations that he makes along the way to his
main thesis, I don't find his big picture--the justification for
writing the book--that compelling. For every current example of
transformation he gives, I could find an example of somebody doing it
centuries ago, and McCracken gives minimal attention to such
historical parallels. If more of that kind of transformation is going
on now, perhaps it's because there are more people alive, or more
wealth and leisure, or more freedom in all things. Finally, while I
was impressed with his breadth of scope, I sometimes thought he drew
his view too broadly and forced a lot of things into his thesis that
are described better with other frameworks.

Grant McCracken has an impressive command of society and culture - ritual, myth, Ovid, and more make appearances in this book. But it's also a truly entertaining look at contemporary culture, from Ani DiFranco to Martha Stewart, and Madonna to Tony Robbins. The reader feels in good hands with someone as knowledgeable as McCracken, who got his doctorate at the University of Chicago and has taught at top-tier universities. His insights are fresh and bear the mark of someone who knows what he's talking about.

Mr. Hendrickson recounts events otherwise hard to find in print. This book should be on every sailor's shelf, whether he is a weekend yachtsman or makes his living from the sea. As the title indicates, this is a true almanac; it contains facts about the ocean itself, the atmosphere above the ocean, the terrain below the surface, the creatures it contains, and events and accomplishments man has attained while working and playing in and on her depths. I keep a copy at home, on every vessel I own, in my office, and with my dive gear at all times. I promise this is an informative text you won't want to put down...reads like a thriller from cover to cover. Good reading to you.

Fun, but out of date for biology

I hunted for a book exactly like this after reading two titles (Deep Atlantic, Monsters of the Sea) by Richard Ellis. I was looking for something that would, like Ellis, recall me to my sense of wonder. This book can do that to some extent, but it's got a major flaw: a great deal of the information in it is simply out of date. It's especially flawed for marine biology; the supposed senseless ferocity of certain creatures reads like a 1960s children's book you found in the library. I'd recommend this to a person who wants a collection of classic sea yarns and who isn't especially sophisticated as a science reader.

Endless Enterteinment

I bought this book on my second trip while commercial fishing on board the crabber/tender "Katrina Em" in Kodiak Island Alaska. The year was 1995, I have carried this book with me wherever I go and have never been bored with it. I have re-read some of the stories over and over again over the years and they have never ceased to run my imagination full of adventure and admiration for some of it's characters. Sometimes I wished to have contribuited to this collection of adventures with one of my own, but I yet have to match any of them.

The read of this book compares to reading an Encyclopedia, a very long, fact heavy, read. Having said that the books works as a reference guide. If you need to quickly refresh yourself on the various methods of welding this book is good. If you're sitting down by the pool to educate yourself on a pipeline, this book is not for you.
