About the Author
Enda Walsh is a multi-award-winning Irish playwright. He lives in London. His work has been translated into over twenty languages and has been performed internationally since 1998. His recent plays include Ballyturk and Room 303 at the 2014 Galway International Arts Festival; Misterman, presented by Landmark Productions and Galway International Arts Festival in Ireland, London and New York (2011–2012); and several plays for Druid Theatre Company, including Penelope, which has been presented in Ireland, America and London, from 2010–2011, The New Electric Ballroom, which played Ireland, Australia, Edinburgh, London, New York and LA from 2008–2009, and The Walworth Farce, which played Ireland, Edinburgh, London and New York, as well as an American and Australian tour, from 2007–2010. He won a Tony Award in 2012 for writing the book for the musical Once, seen on Broadway, in the West End and on a US tour. His other plays include Delirium (Theatre O/Barbican), which played Dublin and a British tour in 2008; Chatroom (National Theatre), which played at the National Theatre and on tour in Britain and Asia (2006–2007); and The Small Things (Paines Plough), which played London and Ireland (2005). A Parsec Short of Really Good

I hated Aftermath. I thought I got cheated out of the storyline I was promised, the characters I loved, the feeling of reading Star Wars. Life Debt is unarguably better than Aftermath. It contains more of Rae Sloane and Galius Rex. It gives Leia, Han, and Chewie real time on the page. It develops the Empire and Republic's posturing for control. It cut down on interludes.
But it still focuses on the Wexley family. It doesn't give Han and Chewie a lot of pages, using them as fringe characters to assist Team Wexley. In what I feel is the biggest crime it gives an entire space battle (3 Star Destroyers v Rebels) a single paragraph.
I just don't feel like it is reading Star Wars yet. I hope that changes in book 3. When it feels like Star Wars I'll give 4 stars. When it feels like must read Star Wars I'llgive it 5. Unless you enjoy the author's style I suggest reading Wookiepedia for plot points and buying a different new canon book. Bloodline, Lost Stars, Tarkin and Ashoka were all much better.

Better, but a couple parsecs short

To start with, it should be known that I really did not like the first of the Aftermath series, see my review for more specifics. That being said, Life Debt is better, making steps in the right direction, but it still isn't where I would expect a good or a great Star Wars novel to be.

First, let's talk writing. Life Debt is written in third person, but like the first book, it is written in third person-present tense. This style of writing is like nails on a chalkboard to me. It hurts to read. This gets. Compounded by. The lurching. Stop. And. Start. Of sentences throughout the book. The icing on the cake comes down to poor editing, with a number of obvious grammatical errors and outright misspelled words. Granted, authors are not perfect, so I can't blame Wendig for this, but his editorial team should be ashamed.

Next, I want to discuss the story. While Life Debt is much better and far more interesting than its predecessor, there is one major plot hole that bothered me from one point in the novel all the way into the ending. Giving it away would be a major spoiler, but that makes it all the more egregious, so much of the plot hangs on this one element so awfully conceived as to render much of the novel senseless even if the idea was pretty cool.

However, Wendig reclaims a little bit of credit for putting more focus on established Star Wars characters, with Chewie, Leia, and Han Solo taking center stage to much of the plot, even if the bulk of the novel follows the team established in the prior novel.

Lastly, Star Wars fan credit. I cannot, as a fan, express how angry I am getting with little teases dangled in front of us with no explanation. For instance, there is a new sheriff in a town on Tattooine wearing armor we are lead to believe belongs to Boba Fett. But it it Boba Fett? Who knows, they don't answer the question. It gets infuriating that they won't answer small questions like this. That being said, I love trying to make guesses out of who might be Rey's parents or who Snoke is, if they are in these novels and I think pone of them is, but it is too early to tell.

All that being said, the adventure was better this go around, but not great. It is still missing the punch of the old expanded universe that us long-standing Star Wars fans are looking for and feel the younger generation of Star Wars fans deserve.

so Life Debt is better than its predecessor

Okay, so Life Debt is better than its predecessor. I'll give it that much. People were not constantly coming back from the dead. Beings did not possess super powers they weren't supposed to have. Norra did not act like an untrained Jedi (so my prediction about her is wrong so far), and Han and Leia get more screen time. Despite that, it still took a lot of pushing to get me to the finish line. Never did I feel suspense enough to want to turn the page. Are they trying to explain why Leia is on the outs with the New Republic in TFA? Wait, I thought that happened in Bloodline, which takes place many years later.

Romance? Ugh! Chuck Wendig should NOT write romance. The best romances in the Star Wars universe were Luke and Mara, and Wedge and Iella. I couldn't wait for those couples to get together. Here? They had to knock me over the head with a bouquet, and I still don't believe it. Wedge and Norra have NO chemistry. Sinjir? Give me a break. I'm not against homosexuality, but you don't put a romance in a story unless it advances the plot. His partner was only there to show Sinjir's sexual preference--a social/political statement for OUR world, which I don't want to know about when I'm reading Star Wars. All romantic relationships were forced, like a team captain stood up and said, "You and you. Together."

The plot itself meandered along. We're supposed to believe that Leia, the woman who not long before put aside the Rebellion to risk her life for a scoundrel, would now entrust the hunt to some unknown cast of characters, just so those characters could get the lead role in this book. Han at least acted the part of Han who lost Chewie (think back to the Legends books). Leia does eventually get her act together. Good for her!

Sloane? I remember Sloane. Glad to see her back.

The Sins Of The Parents and Their Parents

In an unusual transition, this true story went from a made-for-TV in 2004 to an enthralling memoir in 2010. "Homeless to Harvard" was the descriptive title of the movie and it is incorporated into the book title. Liz Murray's grandfathers were abusive alcohols who made the streets seem safer than home. The parents of Liz Murray were baby-boomers who grew up in the '60's and were drug addicts in the '70's. It was Liz Murray who has broken the generational pattern of violence, of substance abuse and of homelessness. She is all of thirty now.

This autobiography is a can't-put-down page turner describing the crazy life of having indiscriminating drug addicts for parents (all drugs were good, but cocaine was always better). Having worked for many years with children and teenagers with lives similiar to the author, her story rings true with its harrowing details of survival (which seemed normal to her, having nothing else to compare it to). Her prose is simple and straight forward as she describes her journey from darkness to light (hence the title).

Great book Liz ~

I have been waiting for this book to come out for a while.
Really enjoyed the movie, but the book has so much more detail about what Liz had to endure on her journey.
It is an amazing story and one that I will never forget.
The book is very well written - you kind of get swept up into her daily life growing up ..
Anything I'm up against in life, it will most likely pale in comparison to what Liz had to deal with on a daily basis as a child - and reading about the hard road she travelled is an inspiration. Thanks Liz ~ !!

Triumph over profound adversity

Breaking Night is gripping story about the child of two chronic drug abusers and how she managed to finally break the cycle of dysfunction that turned her life into a nightmare of hunger and homelessness. Despite the bleakness of her upbringing, Liz Murray, much like Jeannette Walls in The Glass Castle, does not play the victim card. In fact, it's not until she is finally safe in her own apartment and about to enroll in college does Liz allow herself to fully grieve over the way she was raised.

Liz Murray was saved by school. The young girl who hated the institution and became a truant finally realizes at age 17 that the only way for her to improve her circumstances is through getting an education, but arriving at that conclusion was no easy task. Liz and her older sister Lisa were raised in abject poverty in the Bronx. Their parents would routinely leave them alone in their apartment while they were out all night scoring drugs. Their mother Jean was legally blind and received government assistance, but as soon as the monthly checks arrived they would be spent on drugs. The girls were so hungry that they ate mayonnaise sandwiches and cherry Chapstick. But Liz still loved both of her parents and even tried to shield them from Lisa's critcism.

Things go from bad to worse after Liz' mother leaves her father to move in with another man who has a job and lives in a better neighborhood saying that it's the only way that she can stay off drugs. Liz refuses to leave her father and is placed in a group home because of truancy and is later released into the custody of her mother's boyfriend. This marks the beginning of a downward spiral that leads to Liz living on the streets and stealing to survive. Her brief experience in the system was such that she preferred take her chances on the street rather than be treated like less than a person and housed with unstable and mean girls.

Far from some maudlin sob story about a hard knock life, the author relays her story simply and effectively. She talks about the practical implications of being raised by junkies and having to rely on the kindness of friends to meet her basic needs. Liz was often hungry. Her clothing was filthy and raggedy and the kids at school made fun of her because of it it. Liz realized that there would be a point when people tired of helping her and started thinking about her future. She was 17 years old and only had one high school credit and still had no permamnent address, but Liz vowed to graduate from high school rather than just getting a GED in order to give herself more options. One of the biggest lessons she learned from her mother is that when you have no options, you just have to accept what life throws your way. In the case of her HIV positive mother, this meant living with a cruel man who showed her very little compassion in the latter stages of her disease.

The story ends with her about to receive her acceptance letter from Harvard University. She was so anxious about it and was driving herself and her teachers crazy about the decision until a trusted adviser told her that she was going to be okay either way and to give herself a break. The old Liz would have taken this the wrong way, but after two years of hard work, and mentoring she was able to see the truth in those words. Getting to that point was a huge accomplishment and even if she never went to Harvard Liz had made already great strides and was even profiled in The New York Times.

I think this book should be required reading for high school students because it shows not only how easily you can find yourself on the wrong path, but also that it's always possible to start over. This was a truly an inspirational story.

I was looking to purchase a Japanese TATTOO culture art book.I read reviews on amazon "TATTOO IN JAPAN" seemed to have highest ratings that caught my eyes,Even though a little pricey thought if going to purchase one Japanese tattoo art book TATTOO IN JAPAN sounds like the winner from reviews,You pay for what you get,The book is thick n huge very well made quality wise,The pages are thick n glossy 12" x 9 1/2" seems like photo paper,not cheap stuff,No little photos all cramped into one page every photo takes up one whole page so you can see all the detail.Book starts out with a little how it all started,meanings,then alittle about the Masters,Horitoku,Horiyoshi III,Horikazuwaka,Horimyo.If your looking for the whole long history in detail in print not happening this book is mostly 12 x 91/2 glossy photograghs.I'm very satisfied with my purchase couldn't be happier,Do yourself a favor instead of buying a few smaller books that would add up to TATTOO IN JAPAN price,Just buy it now,nuff said.

An incredible addition

I've been collecting books on Japanese tattooing since 1988, when the book of the same name was first published in hardcover. Since then I've collected almost every book on the subject, at least all of the ones available on Amazon, save one.
Every one of these books approach the subject from a different perspective, either heavy on text or photos, but I've have'nt gotten a bad one yet.
Having said all that, this one, from a purely visual perspective, is the absolute best one yet. Really stunning photography and the sheer pleasure of owning a massive book of this quality-- both of content and actual quality of the physical book itself-- even the pages are thicker than most.
It covers both traditional japanese and modern western influenced tattooing. In the other volumes I own, The tradional work is always technically flawless. Almost all of it here is also such... but what fascinated me were several pages of backpieces that were NOT technically flawless--- Shaky lines, faded color and just plain bad drawing and layout. Wow, the old artists are not ALL super genius's!
Obviously, it's expensive, but worth it. I wish I could afford the 3 volume black and white set from the same publisher!

This book is a really amazing look at tattoos in Japan. The quality of photography is very high. When I purchased it for my girlfriend, it arrived in excellent condition. Unfortunately, I had to return it for reasons unrelated to the quality of the book. I'd buy it again if I had cause.

I was very happy with the quality of the book and it matched exactly the way the write-up said it would be. I am in college, and needed this book because I prefer the book rather than an online book. I hate to have to read on the computer screen. I have no way to highlight my main points. I am of the old school and like the feel of the book for learning. I do have a kindle and it has its place. I just would rather have a book for learning so I can go back and see what I have singled out from the book for study.
Thanks so much for the fast delivery. I ordered late and got the book just before the start of the class.

Just What I Needed for Class

My book came just before the semester started. I searched it using the ISBN#, found it without a problem! Triple-checked it with the WCTC campus bookstore to make sure it was the right book, it was right on. My instructor said this book is brand new-just written in time for the fall 09 school semester, written by a WCTC instructor.

I was very happy to buy it here cheaper than the school bookstore was selling it for. Although, now 8 weeks into the semester, I see Amazon's price is even lower now than when I bought it!!! But that's the way it goes!

Book seems to be laid out well, easy to follow and understand.

For my class - Professional Development

I only bought this book for my professional development class, however, now that the class is over, I am going to keep it because it has a lot of good material for communicating in the workplace. The title does say it all. This textbook so far will be the only one I have kept since starting college. By the way I am a sophmore in college so that tells you I have been through a few classes so far.
