This is the groundbreaking cult classic by the Legendary Grandmaster Bent Larsen and the noted openings theoretician Steffen Zeuthen. Zoom 001 stands for Zero Hour for Operative Opening Models. The principal idea behind Zoom 001 is the creation of “pattern knowledge” of typical middle game/endgame structures—one of a grandmaster’s essential qualities—cultivated through the use of the Grunfeld and Catalan openings. Using twenty modern Grandmasters' games, the authors show how these structures typically arise. Included are games by Andersson, Botvinnik, Fischer, Korchnoi, and of course Larsen. By using complete games instead of variations that might be outdated by the next tournament, Larsen and Zeuthen demonstrate that pattern recognition is a timeless skill. By recognizing these typical patterns, you will not only gain a feel for the position, but will be able to effectively form a game plan that will allow you to carry you to won positions.

Outdated and Impractical; Interesting for die hard Larsen fans and Chess Opening Academicians
By Amazon Customer
An interesting concept and worth reading if you are interested in the "typographic" approach to openings and if you want to see how to create a truly comprehensive repertoire. I do have several complaints, unfortunately.
First of all, this is basically a re-print of a book that is over 30 years old that recommends the Grunfeld as a system to play against everything as Black and as White. There is no update to theory. The most recent games are from the early 1980s. Of course, even a cursory update would be considerable in the case of the Grunfeld (and Catalan which is a Grunfeld in reverse). It is worse than useless to play such sharp openings without a comprehensive knowledge of theory--you are in danger of losing every single move.
In contrast, if you play the solid Queen's Gambit you might end up with a slightly worse position but it is one that is unlikely to be defeated by a single blow. Also, solid openings like the QGD are easier to navigate with common sense and understanding of basic ideas. The Grunfeld and Catalan often involve the sacrifice of material which requires a detailed memorization of lines and an understanding of compensation.
Second, there is little explanation of themes and ideas. Even the non-verbal annotations are very sparse with maybe one or two comments made per game.
So why do I give this even three stars? Well I am a serious tournament player rated over 2200, with a particular interest in opening repertoires as well as Bent Larsen (not that there is much here from him, but for die hard fans anything is something!). It is interesting for me to see the results of Larsen imposing a single system of development against nearly anything his opponent could throw at him--with White and Black!
Naturally, if I decided to play this system I would need to spent large amounts of time "supplementing" this book with monographs dedicated to the Grunfeld and Catalan as well as independent research with a database and chess engine.
So if you are expecting to read a repertoire book that you can then apply in practice without extensive work with additional resources, you will be bitterly disappointed. I think there will be reviews that draw similar conclusions to mine and as a result I would advise the publisher to create a "click to Look Inside" feature so people can see what they are getting into. [UPDATE: It looks like the publisher has added this feature. I recommend using the "search inside" function using a player's name as a search term, so that you can see an example of an annotated game as these represent over 80% of the book.] In my case I would still buy the book, but I think many will be disappointed.

Zoom 001

This is a reprint of the 1979 book by Bent Larsen and Stephen Zeuthen. Previously
Stephen Zeuthen had written a book on the Benoni Defense which was very
comprehensive and one of the leading books on the Benoni.
My friend Reynolds (national master) spent most of his life searching for this book.
He recently found and purchased this book from Ebay for $95.00. This was the
original book and not a reprint. At that time there was no reprint of this chess book.
His students kept egging him on to win the bid.
There are 471 full chess games within this book. The Zoom 001 is based on
the Grunfield Indian Structure and from that structure is derived 8 sub substructures
and 8 sub models. I recently purchased this chess book because I wanted to master
the Gruenfeld Indian and Catalan pawn structures. And because I was having
difficulty with finding a reply to 1.d4 when I take on the chess engines IM Ling Fong
(2400) and IM Ignacio (2450) in game 15 minutes on the Internet Chess Club. On the
GM level the Gruenfeld is very dangerous and has scored many wins. Anyway I wanted
to add this to my chess opening repertoire to further my understanding of the game
of chess.
Originally I paid $20.97 for this chess book, however the price went up to $23+ on
Amazon.com, It is selling for $30+ on Ebay.
